🏒 Game of the Day: Utah Mammoth vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

7:00 PM ET | Sportsnet / TVA Sports (Canada) · SN-PIT · Utah16 · PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh

Crosby has 1,111 assists with Pittsburgh, level with Ray Bourque’s total with Boston for the most by a player with one franchise in NHL history. Bourque needed 1,518 games; Crosby has played 1,432. One more and the record is his. He also has 1,768 career points, three behind Marcel Dionne for sixth all time.

Utah, 8-5-0, is a tough opponent for a milestone night. Mikhail Sergachev has six points during a five-game point streak. Pittsburgh is 5-6-1.

Prediction: Crosby sets the record in front of the home crowd, and Pittsburgh edges Utah.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Detroit Red Wings

7:30 PM ET | ESPN+ / Disney+ / Hulu (US) · SN+ (Canada) · Little Caesars Arena, Detroit

Kane, 37, returns to Detroit after three seasons with the Red Wings; he signed a two-year deal with Chicago on July 23. One assist would make him the 21st player in NHL history with 900, and the second active skater after Crosby. Connor Bedard needs one goal to pass Alex DeBrincat for sixth-most by a Blackhawk 21 or younger, and Moritz Seider is one assist from tying Dennis Seidenberg for third among German-born defensemen. Detroit, 5-4-3, is without Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade in the offseason and lost the captaincy before camp. Chicago is 4-8-0.

Prediction: Kane gets No. 900, but Detroit wins.

Washington Capitals vs. Nashville Predators

8:00 PM ET | Scripps · Monumental Sports Network · Bridgestone Arena, Nashville

Ovechkin still needs one assist to tie Backstrom’s franchise record of 762. Before the game, Nashville inducts Trotz into the Preds Golden Hall; he coached the Predators for 1,196 games over 15 seasons, has 914 wins (fifth in NHL history) and won the 2018 Stanley Cup with Washington. The Capitals are 7-4-0; the Predators are 4-3-5 and 2-2-4 in their past eight.

Prediction: Ovechkin ties Backstrom on Trotz’s night, and Washington wins.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Carolina Hurricanes

7:00 PM ET | HHN · CBJHN · Lenovo Center, Raleigh

Carolina is 10-2-2 and 10-1-1 since an 0-1-1 start, two weeks before its Global Series trip to Helsinki. Sebastian Aho needs four goals to tie Eric Staal for second in Hurricanes/Whalers history and three to match Olli Jokinen for fourth among Finland-born players. Columbus, 5-5-0, has won two straight.

Prediction: The champions keep rolling.

Vancouver Canucks vs. San Jose Sharks

10:00 PM ET | Sportsnet (Canada) · NBCSCA · SAP Center, San Jose

Vancouver finally won on Tuesday, scoring four times in the third period of a 6-5 overtime win in Anaheim to end a 10-game skid (0-9-1). Elias Pettersson brings a six-game point streak. The Sharks, 6-6-1, have been outscored 8-4 in two straight losses. The Canucks are 3-10-1.

Prediction: Pettersson stays hot and Vancouver makes it two in a row.

Around the Rest of the League
