🏒 Game of the Day: Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York Islanders

7:00 PM ET | ESPN+ / Disney+ / Hulu (US) · SN+ (Canada) · UBS Arena, Elmont

Carolina is 12-3-2, first in the Eastern Conference and the NHL’s most complete team so far: third in goals per game (3.76) and second in goals allowed (2.29). The Hurricanes are 11-0-1 when they score more than two goals. Tuesday’s loss in Nashville was only their third in regulation.

The Islanders, 7-5-2, win with defense. They are fifth in goals allowed (2.71) and fifth on the penalty kill (86.0 percent) but 25th in scoring and 29th on the power play. Schaefer, the 19-year-old defenseman, has 14 points and plays almost 27 minutes a night. New York is still without Mathew Barzal, Matias Maccelli and Ryan Pulock, though all three practiced in noncontact jerseys on Wednesday.

Prediction: Carolina scores three and wins.

Boston Bruins vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

7:00 PM ET | SN-PIT · NESN · PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh

Boston leads the Atlantic at 11-4-1 after a shootout win over Vegas on Monday. David Pastrnak moved into third on the Bruins’ all-time goals list last week. Pittsburgh, 5-8-2, gets Malkin back after he missed Tuesday’s loss to Vegas; he is a “full go,” according to the team. Sidney Crosby came into the week level with Marcel Dionne for sixth on the NHL’s all-time points list.

Prediction: Malkin’s return isn’t enough – Boston wins.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Edmonton Oilers

8:00 PM ET | Sportsnet West (Canada) · FOXLA+ · Rogers Place, Edmonton

Gauthier has hat tricks in back-to-back games, the second in Tuesday’s win in Vancouver. Edmonton, 11-2-3, is tied with Minnesota for the most points in the West. McDavid opened the season with a 15-game point streak and leads the NHL in scoring. The Oilers will be without rookie Isaac Howard for a couple of weeks. Anaheim, 7-7-1, plays in Calgary on Friday.

Prediction: McDavid outduels Gauthier and Edmonton wins.

Nashville Predators vs. Colorado Avalanche

9:30 PM ET | Altitude · Scripps · Ball Arena, Denver

Nashville beat the Hurricanes on Tuesday and is 6-4-5. It also beat Colorado 6-2 in Nashville on Oct. 25. The Avalanche, 9-6-1, have steadied after a rough October stretch, and Nathan MacKinnon is among the league’s top scorers.

Prediction: Colorado gets its revenge at home.

Vancouver Canucks vs. Winnipeg Jets

7:00 PM ET | TSN3 / Sportsnet Pacific (Canada) · Canada Life Centre, Winnipeg

Winnipeg finally broke a nine-game losing streak on Tuesday in remarkable fashion, scoring four goals late in the third period in Montreal and winning in overtime. The Jets are 5-8-3. Vancouver is last in the NHL at 3-13-1 and lost to Anaheim on Tuesday.

Prediction: Winnipeg builds on Tuesday’s comeback.

Blues at Devils (7:00 PM): New Jersey, 10-5-0, hosts a St. Louis team that lost at the Rangers on Tuesday.

Flyers at Rangers (7:00 PM): The Rangers, 8-7-1, ended a four-game skid on Tuesday; Philadelphia is 4-9-4.
