🏒 Game of the Day: Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Islanders
2:00 PM ET | Sportsnet (Canada) · MSGSN · UBS Arena, Elmont
McDavid leads the NHL with 36 points (eight goals, 28 assists) in 13 games, a 232-point pace. He now owns the record for the longest season-opening assist streak at 13 games after two more in Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Calgary, and he needs four points to tie Lemieux’s 38 points in October 1988. Edmonton, 9-2-2, has opened the season with a team-record five straight road wins.
Across the ice is another No. 1 pick. Matthew Schaefer scored the overtime winner in Minnesota on Thursday, has 14 points in 13 games and plays almost 27 minutes a night. The Islanders are 7-4-2 and 4-1-1 in their past six. It is the first of two meetings this season.
Prediction: McDavid gets close to Lemieux, and Edmonton’s road run continues.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Montreal Canadiens
7:00 PM ET | Sportsnet One / Sportsnet East / TVA Sports (Canada) · SN-PIT · Bell Centre, Montreal
Montreal, 8-3-2, is chasing a fifth straight win without captain Nick Suzuki, who is expected to miss his fifth straight game and could be out one to three more weeks. Nine players have scored during the streak. Jacob Fowler could start after Jakub Dobes won in Dallas on Thursday; Fowler is 6-1-0 with a 1.54 goals-against average, a .942 save percentage and two shutouts. Pittsburgh, 5-6-2, has points in three straight, and Crosby needs one power-play point to tie Phil Housley for 10th in NHL history.
Prediction: Fowler stays sharp and Montreal makes it five in a row.
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Nashville Predators
2:00 PM ET | Scripps · The Spot · Bridgestone Arena, Nashville
Kucherov, who recently passed Steven Stamkos as the Lightning’s all-time leading scorer, is expected to play amid reports that he has asked for a trade. He is in the final year of his contract and can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1; general manager Julien BriseBois has said the team has no intention of trading him. Stamkos, now in his third season in Nashville, is on the other side.
Prediction: Kucherov answers the noise with a big game, and Tampa Bay wins.
Chicago Blackhawks vs. Boston Bruins
1:00 PM ET | NESN · CHSN · SN1 (Canada) · TD Garden, Boston
David Pastrnak needs one goal to pass Patrice Bergeron (427) for third in Bruins history. Boston, 9-4-1, still leads the Atlantic but has lost two straight after a 7-0-1 run. Patrick Kane is still one assist from 900, which would make him the first U.S.-born player to reach the mark. Chicago is 4-9-0 and has scored six goals in its past five games.
Prediction: Pastrnak gets the record and Boston ends its skid.
St. Louis Blues vs. Detroit Red Wings
1:00 PM ET | DSN · BN+ · Little Caesars Arena, Detroit
Detroit, 6-4-3, has points in eight of its past nine despite the Dylan Larkin situation: the former captain has been suspended without pay until he is traded. Viktor Arvidsson scored a hat trick in Thursday’s 4-1 win over Chicago and leads the team with eight goals. St. Louis, 6-6-1, beat Boston 4-1 on Thursday.
Prediction: Arvidsson stays hot and Detroit wins.
Around the Rest of the League
