4 Nations Face-Off Championship: Canada vs USA Preview, What to Watch

On Thursday night, a rematch between the United States and Canada will decide the winner of the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off.

As a native of Massachusetts, U.S. coach Mike Sullivan is aware that this "great hockey city" will be energized for the performance. After winning 3-1 in round-robin play in Montreal on Saturday, his club will be trying to double down on its bitter foe.

Due to illness and injury, Team USA may have roster-related concerns going into Thursday. For example, the Boston Bruins have announced that defenseman Charlie McAvoy is still in the hospital after suffering a "significant injury to his AC joint" and an infection in his shoulder.

Quinn Hughes, a defenseman from the Vancouver Canucks, was being discussed as a potential replacement, however he has not received medical clearance and will not be joining the squad.

McAvoy, American captain Auston Matthews, and siblings Brady and Matthew Tkachuk, who are forwards, did not play in Monday's 2-1 defeat to Sweden. Brady Tkachuk, who did not attend practice on Wednesday, is among the players Sullivan anticipates playing, with the exception of McAvoy.

It will be difficult to replace McAvoy's skill, particularly following a powerful physical display against Canada.

With defenseman Cale Makar making a comeback from sickness for Canada's last round-robin match against Finland, the team's personnel situation is more stable.

The three-time All-Star and previous Norris Trophy winner is eager to try his hand at a winner-take-all game in best-on-best action after missing the first U.S. showdown.

With 15 of the 28 Stanley Cup winners on all four rosters, Canada had a lot of big-game experience going into the tournament. In addition to winning two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada, captain Sidney Crosby has won three NHL titles with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

While teammates like Sam Reinhart of the Florida Panthers have played many games at TD Garden as opponents, Bruins captain Brad Marchand is looking to assist Canada in his home NHL building. It's simply another Game 7 assignment on Thursday.

Cooper is aware that a victory on Thursday would have enormous significance north of the border. However, he stated that the hockey game is the winner regardless of the outcome.
