🏒 Game of the Day: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals

7:30 PM ET | TNT / HBO Max (US) · Capital One Arena, Washington

Alex Ovechkin announced on Monday that 2026-27 will be his 22nd and final NHL season. Tonight is the first stop on a long goodbye: the last home opener of the league’s all-time leading goal-scorer, and the first of the final four regular-season meetings between Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. Few rivalries have shaped an era of the sport the way theirs has.

Washington is 1-1-0 after a 5-2 win in Carolina and a 3-1 loss in Tampa. Alex Tuch, acquired from Buffalo in a sign-and-trade on June 24, leads the team with two goals. The Capitals will be without defenseman Matt Roy, who left Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury and did not practice Tuesday.

Pittsburgh is coming off its first loss of the season, 3-2 to Winnipeg on Monday, after a 2-0-0 start powered by Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Bryan Rust, who matched his career high with 65 points last season, could make his season debut after missing three games with an upper-body injury.

Prediction: Ovechkin scores in front of a full, emotional building and the Capitals win.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets

7:30 PM ET | Prime Video · Altitude · Canada Life Centre, Winnipeg

The last two Presidents’ Trophy winners meet in Colorado’s first road game of the year. The Avalanche are 2-0-0 with 14 goals – tied for the franchise record through two games and the second-most ever by a reigning Presidents’ Trophy winner. Artturi Lehkonen has three goals, Nathan MacKinnon five points, and Martin Necas scored twice against St. Louis on Saturday to reach 50 goals with Colorado in just 110 games.

Winnipeg is 2-0-1 and opens a three-game homestand after back-to-back 3-2 road wins in Detroit and Pittsburgh. Kyle Connor (three goals, two assists) and Cole Perfetti (two goals, three assists) each have five points.

Prediction: Colorado’s firepower wins out in a high-scoring game.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Anaheim Ducks

10:00 PM ET | Prime Video · KCOP-13 · Sportsnet West · Honda Center, Anaheim

A first-round rematch from last spring, when Anaheim knocked out the two-time defending Western Conference champions in six games. Edmonton is 2-0-1 under new coach Mike Babcock, with Connor McDavid second in the league with nine points and Evan Bouchard leading all defensemen with eight.

Anaheim is 2-0-0 and has won consecutive season-opening games for the fifth time in franchise history. Leo Carlsson has five points, the fifth Duck ever with five through a team’s first two games.

Prediction: McDavid gets his revenge game – Oilers by two.
