🏒 Game of the Day: New York Rangers vs. Washington Capitals
7:00 PM ET | NHL Network (US) · MNMT / MSG · Capital One Arena, Washington
Since losing 3-0 in Boston on opening night, the Rangers have not lost. They are 4-1-0, have not allowed a first-period goal all season and have scored five empty-net goals during the streak – two of them in Alexis Lafreniere’s hat trick in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Islanders. Igor Shesterkin is 3-1-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage, and he has a goal and an assist to go with it.
Washington is 2-1-0 and riding the emotion of Wednesday’s 5-3 home-opener win over Pittsburgh, the first home game of Alex Ovechkin’s farewell season. Ovechkin is still looking for his first goal, but the Capitals have been carried by Logan Thompson in net: he is 2-0 with a 2.50 GAA and a .921 save percentage, and ranked second behind Andrei Vasilevskiy in NHL.com’s first Vezina Trophy tracker of the season. Shesterkin was seventh.
Prediction: Thompson outduels Shesterkin and ends the Rangers’ streak.
Anaheim Ducks vs. Winnipeg Jets
8:00 PM ET | Sportsnet (Canada) · KCOP-13 · Canada Life Centre, Winnipeg
Winnipeg is 3-0-1 and has won three straight, the latest a 3-2 comeback over Colorado on Wednesday in which Kyle Connor scored twice. Connor has five goals in four games and is tied with Ilya Kovalchuk at 328 franchise goals; one more moves him into sole possession of third on the Jets’ all-time list. Stuart Skinner, signed in July, is 2-0-1 with a .920 save percentage.
Anaheim is 2-1-0 after letting a 2-0 lead slip in a 5-2 loss to Edmonton on Tuesday, when Beckett Sennecke scored twice on the power play. Leo Carlsson leads the Ducks with seven points (one goal, six assists).
Prediction: Connor reaches third place on the franchise list and the Jets keep rolling.
Seattle Kraken vs. Detroit Red Wings
7:00 PM ET | Prime Video (Canada) · DSN · KONG · Little Caesars Arena, Detroit
Seattle captain Jordan Eberle has a point in all four games, and one more would give him the longest season-opening point streak in Kraken history. Matty Beniers needs one point for 200 in his career. Seattle has been all over the map at 2-2-0 – two 6-1 wins over Calgary, and losses to Vegas and Edmonton. Detroit snapped a two-game slide with a 5-3 win over Ottawa on Tuesday, when Dylan Larkin, no longer the captain and with a pending trade request, had a goal and an assist.
Prediction: Eberle extends his streak and Seattle wins on the road.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
7:00 PM ET | SN-PIT · CBJHN · SN+ / TVA Sports (Canada) · Nationwide Arena, Columbus
Columbus has had an odd start: two games in three nights, then five days off. The Blue Jackets are 1-1-0 and begin a back-to-back that continues in St. Louis on Saturday. Matthew Knies, acquired from Toronto on Sept. 28, has four points in two games with his new team. Pittsburgh is 2-2-0 after back-to-back losses to Winnipeg and Washington.
Prediction: Crosby and Malkin get Pittsburgh back on track.
