🏒 Game of the Day: Florida Panthers vs. Anaheim Ducks

8:00 PM ET | Prime Video (Canada) · KCOP-13 / Scripps (US) · Honda Center, Anaheim

Anaheim’s home opener comes with a win already in hand. The Ducks went into T-Mobile Arena on Friday, the building where their playoff run ended last spring, and won 4-3 over Vegas. Leo Carlsson, 21, had a goal and an assist in his season debut – a timely reminder of why Anaheim matched the five-year, $90 million offer sheet he signed with Philadelphia in July.

Florida arrives 1-0-1 with a very different look. Brady Tkachuk, acquired from Ottawa in June, is on the top line, but captain Aleksander Barkov was placed on long-term injured reserve on Saturday after a lower-body injury in Thursday’s overtime loss in San Jose. Brad Marchand has missed the first two games while recovering from offseason surgery. There is a familiar face on the Panthers’ blue line too: Radko Gudas returns to Anaheim, where he spent the past three seasons and wore the “C” for two of them.

The Panthers are three games into a four-game season-opening road trip, and without Barkov the middle of the ice is a real question.

Prediction: Carlsson and a buzzing Honda Center carry Anaheim to 2-0-0.

Winnipeg Jets vs. Detroit Red Wings

1:00 PM ET | NHL Network (US) · TSN 3 (Winnipeg) · Little Caesars Arena, Detroit

Both teams are still looking for their first win. Winnipeg lost 4-3 in overtime to Boston in its opener on Friday, but Kyle Connor scored again – he now has goals in nine straight season openers, the longest such streak in NHL history. Detroit is 0-1-0 and has yet to score after being shut out 2-0 by the Rangers in its home opener.

Prediction: Connor’s line breaks through – Jets win their first game of the season.

Utah Mammoth vs. New York Rangers

6:00 PM ET | MSG · Utah16 · TVA Sports (Canada) · Madison Square Garden, New York

The Rangers have made plenty of history already. Igor Shesterkin scored into an empty net in Thursday’s 5-1 win over Tampa Bay – the 21st goal by a goaltender in NHL history and the first by a Ranger – and rookie Dylan Garand followed with a 2-0 shutout in Detroit on Friday. New York is 2-1-0.

Utah is unbeaten at 2-0-0 after wins over Chicago and in Columbus. Dylan Guenther has five points (three goals, two assists) in two games.

Prediction: Utah’s attack keeps rolling – Mammoth by one.

Calgary Flames vs. Seattle Kraken

8:00 PM ET | Prime Video (Canada) · KONG (Seattle) · Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle

Seattle plays its home opener against the team it routed 6-1 in Calgary on Thursday, when Vince Dunn and Jared McCann had three points apiece. The Kraken are 1-1-0 and on the second night of a back-to-back after a 3-1 loss in Edmonton on Saturday. Calgary is 0-2-0 and has been outscored 10-2.

Prediction: Seattle completes the sweep of the early home-and-home.

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Vancouver Canucks

9:00 PM ET | Sportsnet Pacific (Canada) · Scripps (US) · Rogers Arena, Vancouver

Vegas begins its first road trip at 1-1-0. Jack Eichel has been the driving force with five points (one goal, four assists) in two games under new coach Ryan Craig. Vancouver is 2-1-0 under its own new coach, Manny Malhotra, and the offense has come in bunches: Paul Cotter (three goals, two assists) and Elias Pettersson (two goals, three assists) both have five points.

Prediction: Vegas tightens up on the road and takes it by a goal.
