🏒 Game of the Day: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Colorado Avalanche

7:00 PM ET | NHL Network (US) · Sportsnet (Canada) · Ball Arena, Denver

The oldest and youngest storylines in the sport meet in Denver. Colorado’s Brent Burns brings a 1,011-game consecutive-games streak into tonight; it began on Nov. 21, 2013, when Toronto rookie Gavin McKenna was 5 years old. McKenna, 18, scored his first NHL goal on Tuesday and now gets a look at the most explosive offense in the league.

The Avalanche are averaging 5.75 goals per game, with 23 in four games, and Nathan MacKinnon is on a two-points-per-game pace with three goals and five assists. Colorado is 3-1-0, its only loss a 3-2 comeback defeat in Winnipeg.

Toronto, 2-2-1, is shorthanded down the middle. John Tavares has left the team to be with his family after the birth of his son, and Nick Paul is the top candidate to take his spot on the second line. Containing MacKinnon without one of their most reliable centers is a tall order.

Prediction: Colorado’s attack is too much – Avalanche by two.

Minnesota Wild vs. Florida Panthers

6:00 PM ET | Scripps · Wild+ · Amerant Bank Arena, Sunrise

Florida finally plays at home after opening with four straight road games, and arrives at 2-0-2 despite heavy injury losses. Captain Aleksander Barkov (left knee) avoided surgery but is expected to miss six to eight weeks, and Brad Marchand faces a similar timeline with a left leg injury. Aaron Ekblad is expected back after missing two games for personal reasons. Minnesota, 2-1-1, will be without defenseman Brock Faber indefinitely after surgery for a fractured skull.

Prediction: The home-opener crowd carries Florida to a win.

Dallas Stars vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

7:00 PM ET | Prime Video (Canada) · SN-PIT · PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh

A family affair: Pittsburgh’s Nicholas Robertson faces his brother Jason of the Stars. Sidney Crosby is still looking for his first goal, with two assists in five games, as he begins the chase for a 22nd straight point-per-game season – he already holds the NHL record with 21. Evgeni Malkin, Tommy Novak and Nicholas Robertson share the team lead with three goals. The Stars are 2-2-0, the Penguins 2-2-1.

Prediction: Crosby finally scores and Pittsburgh wins at home.

Edmonton Oilers vs. San Jose Sharks

4:00 PM ET | NBC Sports California · Sportsnet · SAP Center, San Jose

Evan Bouchard has been the story in Edmonton: 11 points (six goals, five assists) and a plus-10 rating in four games for the 3-0-1 Oilers. Darnell Nurse faces his former team for the first time since being traded to San Jose. The Sharks are 3-1-0, and captain Macklin Celebrini is a game-time decision after missing two games with a lower-body injury.

Prediction: Edmonton stays unbeaten in regulation.

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins

1:00 PM ET | NHL Network (US) · NESN · Sportsnet / TVA Sports (Canada) · TD Garden, Boston

David Pastrnak needs one goal to pass Brad Marchand for sole possession of fourth place on Boston’s all-time list, and his next goal will be No. 423. He had four points against Utah on Thursday. Philadelphia, 0-3-2, has scored six goals in five games; Matvei Michkov, with two, is the only Flyer with more than one.

Prediction: Pastrnak gets the milestone and Boston wins.

Around the Rest of the League

Canucks at Devils (3:30 PM): Vancouver continues its Eastern swing; New Jersey looks to end a two-game losing streak.

Mammoth at Sabres (7:00 PM): Utah’s league-best power play against a Buffalo team that allows fewer than 20 shots per game.

Red Wings at Canadiens (7:00 PM): An Original Six meeting on Hockey Night; Detroit is 1-3-0.

Predators at Senators (7:00 PM): Ottawa is 3-1-0 and has won three of its first four.

Hurricanes at Blackhawks (7:00 PM): The champions are 3-1-1 after a rocky first week.

Blue Jackets at Blues (7:00 PM): Columbus plays the second half of a back-to-back and its first road game of the season.

Lightning at Islanders (7:30 PM): Tampa Bay is 3-1-0 and has been one of the stingiest defensive teams since its opening-night loss.

Ducks at Flames (10:00 PM): Calgary is 0-4-0 and still searching for its first win.

Kings at Golden Knights (10:00 PM): Los Angeles is still winless at 0-2-1; Vegas is 4-1-0.

Fourteen games, a home opener in Florida and a 1,011-game iron-man streak on display in Denver. Check local listings for regional broadcast details.
