🏒 Game of the Day: Seattle Kraken vs. Washington Capitals
5:00 PM ET | Prime Video (Canada) · Monumental Sports Network · Capital One Arena, Washington
Four games into his farewell season, Alex Ovechkin is still stuck on 929 career goals – the most in NHL history. History says the first one is coming. Since turning 40, Ovechkin has 32 goals in 86 games, a 0.37-per-game rate that trails only Gordie Howe (0.38) among players with at least 10 games at that age. He also has 13 points in 10 career games against Seattle, and his 759 assists leave him four behind Nicklas Backstrom’s franchise record of 762.
Washington is 3-1-0 after Friday’s 3-1 win over the Rangers. Seattle, 3-2-0, has been one of the surprises of the first two weeks. The Kraken averaged 2.73 goals per game last season, 28th in the league; this season they are scoring 4.20, third behind Colorado and Edmonton, with six goals in three of their five games. Jared McCann leads the team with six points, and 13 players already have at least three.
Prediction: Ovechkin finally scores No. 930 and Washington wins its third straight.
Vancouver Canucks vs. New York Rangers
6:00 PM ET | MSG · Sportsnet Pacific · Madison Square Garden, New York
The Rangers’ season changed on Friday in Washington. Igor Shesterkin is out for the rest of the season with a lower-body injury suffered late in the second period of the 3-1 loss, and backup Joonas Korpisalo is also sidelined for about four weeks. That puts Dylan Garand, a 24-year-old fourth-round pick from 2020 who spent four seasons in Hartford, in the net for his second start; he shut out Detroit in his first on Oct. 2. The Rangers are 4-2-0. Vancouver is 2-4-0 after a 4-1 loss in New Jersey on Saturday.
Prediction: Garand steadies the Rangers in an emotional home game.
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Philadelphia Flyers
7:00 PM ET | NHL Network (US) · SN+ / TVA Sports (Canada) · Xfinity Mobile Arena, Philadelphia
Both teams are on the second night of a back-to-back, and they are heading in opposite directions. Carolina, which swept Philadelphia in the second round last spring on the way to the Cup, has won four straight and is 4-1-1; Sebastian Aho has nine points during a five-game point streak and Jackson Blake has seven in five games. Pyotr Kochetkov is likely in goal. Philadelphia is 0-4-2 and has scored a league-low seven goals in six games. Joseph Woll is expected to start after Dan Vladar made 27 saves in a 5-1 loss in Boston on Saturday.
Prediction: Carolina makes it five in a row.
