Los Angeles Kings vs Florida Panthers Preview, What to Watch
Before their game on Wednesday night in Sunrise, Florida, the Florida Panthers and the Los Angeles Kings are both coming off defeats.
The Panthers lost 4-1 to the host Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday, while the Kings lost 5-2 to the Detroit Red Wings on the road on Monday night.
Third in the Pacific Division, the Kings have only scored 15 goals in their last eight games (2-5-1) and have lost six of them. The third game of a five-game road trip is against the Panthers.
On Monday, Darcy Kuemper recorded 23 saves as Kevin Fiala and Quinton Byfield scored goals for Los Angeles.
The Kings would have only scored one goal during the game and fourteen during their slump if it weren't for Red Wings defenceman Moritz Seider. The ball drifted toward the net after Detroit won a faceoff in its own zone late in the first period. The puck slid off Seider's stick, past goalie Cam Talbot, off the inside of the goal post, and into the net despite his attempt to take it behind the net. Los Angeles led 2-0 when Byfield was given credit for the goal.
However, Detroit scored twice in the second and third periods, and just 35 seconds later, Lucas Raymond of the Red Wings made it 2-1.
The Panthers, second in the Atlantic Division, suffered a 2-2 road loss to the Golden Knights. The Panthers, who defeated San Jose 7-2 on Saturday, were playing their second game in a row.
Spencer Knight made 22 saves, and Anton Lundell scored the goal.
The game on Wednesday night will be a replay of the Kings' 2-1 victory over the Panthers on January 22 in Los Angeles.
After missing seven games due to an upper-body injury, defenseman Aaron Ekblad of the Panthers played in his second game back on Sunday.
Minnesota Wild vs Toronto Maple Leafs Preview, What to Watch
On Wednesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Minnesota Wild will have another opportunity to demonstrate why they have performed better away from home this season.
The Wild improved to 18-5-3 on the road after defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 on Sunday night to start a five-game trip.
With the Wild in a 3-6-0 slump, the trip might be arriving at just the right moment.
At Chicago, the Wild led 3-0 going into the third period and held off the Blackhawks' comeback before winning the game with an empty net goal.
But the Wild will be missing a vital player. Due to a persistent lower-body problem, Kirill Kaprizov will have surgery and will likely be sidelined for at least four weeks.
. After missing twelve games, he came back to play three, including Sunday. This season, he has scored 23 goals and provided 29 assists.
Kaprizov may likely play again, according to general manager Bill Guerin, but he would be "at 60 percent."
On November 3, Minnesota defeated the Maple Leafs 2-1 in overtime at home.
It has been a streaky season for the Maple Leafs. Prior to dropping their last two games, including a 2-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, they had won five straight, lost three straight, and then won three in a row. That came after the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated them 5-1 at home on January 22.
Toronto was without John Tavares (lower body injury), Matthew Knies (upper-body injury), and Max Pacioretty (upper-body injury).
Pacioretty participated in practice on Tuesday. Knies and Tavares skated before practicing.
Tavares was injured during practice on January 15. Knies was injured in the game against Columbus, while Pacioretty was injured in the 7-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on January 18.
Philadelphia Flyers vs New Jersey Devils Preview, What to Watch
A slump and some injuries have pushed the New Jersey Devils closer to a wild card place than the Metropolitan Division lead.
The Devils aim to avoid playing a second straight game without captain Nico Hischier and get back on track Wednesday night when they host the Philadelphia Flyers in Newark, New Jersey.
The Devils are playing their third game since starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom suffered a damaged MCL in last Wednesday's 5-1 victory over the Boston Bruins.
Hischier, meanwhile, was scratched from Monday's 4-2 loss to Philadelphia after being cross-checked by Montreal's Nick Suzuki in Saturday's 4-3 overtime victory.
Hischier, the Devils' leading scorer with 24 goals, is day-to-day, and his health will be uncertain until Wednesday because the Devils did not practice on Tuesday.
The Devils are 4-7-3 in their last 14 games. They once led the Washington Capitals by three points in the Metropolitan Division, but after a 4-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, they have dropped to third place and might face a double-digit deficit to the Capitals, who have two games in hand.
Without Hischier, the Devils were unable to win their third consecutive game despite scoring nine goals in victories against the Boston Bruins and Montreal. The Devils let up the first three goals Monday before Dougie Hamilton and Timo Meier scored.
Philadelphia, which is 6-2-1 in its last nine games after losing four in a row from January 2–9, is looking for its third victory over the Devils this season.
Prior to a difficult back-to-back set against the New York Rangers and New York Islanders, when they were outscored by a combined 9-2 margin despite having a combined 64 shots on goal, the Flyers collected a point in six consecutive games (5-0-1).
For the fourth time since January 9, the Flyers scored four or more goals on Monday. Joel Farabee scored 28 seconds after Bobby Brink's power-play goal, and Garnet Hathaway scored 2:49 into the second half.
After missing the previous three games because of a death in his family, Scott Laughton also scored and assisted Farabee's goal.
Samuel Ersson, who made 31 saves, continues to play well in goal for the Flyers. Ersson is 8-2-0 with a 1.96 goals-against average and a.925 save % in his last 10 appearances, despite giving up five goals to the Rangers last week.
Sean Couturier, the captain of Philadelphia, missed his third game of the season on Monday due to sickness, and he may be sidelined again on Wednesday.
Vancouver Canucks vs Nashville Predators Preview, What to Watch
The Vancouver Canucks, who are at last back on a winning streak, will try to maintain their momentum on Wednesday when they go to the Nashville Predators.
The Canucks started a three-game road trip in excellent form on Monday, defeating the St. Louis Blues 5-2 after defeating the Washington Capitals 2-1 at home on Saturday.
The Canucks have won two straight games for the first time in nearly two months (since Nov. 29–Dec. 1). Between those two wins in a row, the team labored to a 7-10-7 record, which put Vancouver outside the Western Conference playoff line.
The victory on Monday was "a big game for a lot of reasons," according to J.T. Miller, a forward with the Canucks.
With a season-long five-game winning streak, the Predators clawed their way back to the fringes of the playoff battle, while trailing Vancouver by 11 points in the West standings.
The 5-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday put an end to that scorching run, which Nashville coach Andrew Brunette called "50-50 hockey."
Brunette told reporters that he sees the three-day vacation as "a little bit of a mindset reset that we're not afforded to play 50-50 where we're at right now." The Predators are currently heading home.
The outcomes of Nashville's recent special teams play have likewise been about break-even.
The Predators have gone an outstanding 11-for-31 on power plays over the last nine games, despite only being 16-for-23 on the penalty kill.
Filip Forsberg had two assists against Anaheim but no goals, stopping his effort at breaking his own club-record seven-game goal streak. With a point on Wednesday, Forsberg will tie for the fourth-longest point run in Nashville team history, with 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) over a 10-game point streak.
Forsberg leads the Predators in goals (18) and assists (31) this season. Quinn Hughes leads Vancouver in assists (42) and points (56), while Jake DeBrusk leads the team with 17 goals.
Over a six-game point streak, Hughes has nine points (five goals, four assists).
Juuse Saros of Nashville is anticipated to start on Wednesday, but backup Justus Annunen has been given more playing time due to his uncommon troubles. In his last nine games, Saros has a 3-5-0 record and a.869 save percentage.
In Vancouver's last two victories, Kevin Lankinen appeared to be in good form, stopping 56 of 59 shots. The Canucks may either play Thatcher Demko against the relatively less threatening Predators and keep riding the hot hand in Lankinen, or they could save him for Friday's game against the Dallas Stars.
With a.867 save percentage in his first 12 games of the season, Demko is still working to get back on track following a lengthy injury layoff.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs Utah Hockey Club Preview, What to Watch
As they get ready for their meeting in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, the Utah Hockey Club and the Pittsburgh Penguins are in a similar situation.
Both teams are in decline and know they need to turn things around or risk losing their chance to qualify for the playoffs.
Additionally, both players realize they lost a chance the last time out going into the match.
The Penguins, who are now on a three-game losing streak and have only won three of their last 14 games (3-8-3), lost to the San Jose Sharks 2-1 on the road on Monday.
24 seconds into the third period, Crosby leveled the score, but the Penguins were unable to overcome the Sharks, who are at the bottom of the standings and have the worst goals-against average in the league.
The fact that Drew O'Connor failed to convert a penalty shot halfway through the last frame only made Pittsburgh more irate.
The Penguins have had a particularly difficult time scoring goals. In each of their last three appearances, they have been limited to a single total.
After losing to the Ottawa Senators 3-1 on the road on Sunday, Utah returns home after tying the game 1-1 at the end of the third period.
Utah has lost two straight games, both of which were tied in the final frame, and has managed only five wins in the past 17 outings (5-10-2).
Clayton Keller scored a goal on Sunday, extending his point streak to seven games (four goals, nine assists). However, Utah was unable to find the go-ahead tally.
Now Utah opens a four-game homestand, and it must build on a sub-par record at the Delta Center, where the team has an 8-11-4 mark. On a positive note in that regard, Utah has won two straight at home.
When the teams met on Nov. 23 in Pittsburgh, Utah prevailed 6-1 behind two goals and an assists from Dylan Guenther.
