🏒 Game of the Day: Vegas Golden Knights vs. Carolina Hurricanes (Game 1)

8:00 PM ET | ABC (US) · Sportsnet / CBC / TVA Sports (Canada) · Lenovo Center, Raleigh

Two teams arrive on winning streaks and by very different routes. Carolina needed only 13 games to dispatch three opponents, sweeping Ottawa and Philadelphia before beating Montreal in five, and sits at 12-1 in these playoffs. Vegas took the long way, going six games against Utah, six against Anaheim, and then producing the most striking result of the postseason by sweeping the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Avalanche.

The historical framing for Carolina is remarkable: the Hurricanes are the first team to reach a Stanley Cup Final with one loss or fewer since the 1983 Edmonton Oilers. Their Game 5 win over Montreal was also the 100th playoff victory in franchise history since relocating from Hartford – and Rod Brind’Amour has been involved in 98 of them, 39 as a player and 59 as head coach. He captained the 2006 team that won the club’s only title.

Special teams look like the swing factor. Carolina has allowed just four power-play goals all postseason, while Vegas has converted at 23.9 percent and leaned on its man advantage repeatedly. In goal, Frederik Andersen has been the more consistently dominant of the two starters, though Carter Hart has been excellent since the second round.

There is history between the benches too. John Tortorella, hired by Vegas on March 30, is one of only three coaches to reach a Cup Final after taking over in the final 10 games of a season – and is four wins from his second championship, 22 years after Tampa Bay in 2004. Mitch Marner leads all playoff scorers with 21 points, with Jack Eichel close behind. And in a nice subplot, Eichel and Carolina’s Jaccob Slavin won Olympic gold together for the United States in Milan in February; tonight they line up on opposite sides.

Prediction: A tight, low-event opener – Carolina’s structure and Andersen give the Hurricanes Game 1 by a single goal.

Full Stanley Cup Final Schedule

Twenty years after their only championship, the Hurricanes are back on this stage. Vegas, meanwhile, is chasing a second Cup in nine years of existence. It starts tonight in Raleigh.
