🏒 Game of the Day: Vegas Golden Knights vs. Carolina Hurricanes (Game 2)

8:00 PM ET | ABC (US) · Sportsnet / CBC / TVA Sports (Canada) · Lenovo Center, Raleigh

Nobody expected a track meet between two of the league’s best defensive teams, but that is exactly what Game 1 delivered. Vegas won 5-4 on Tuesday in a game that swung repeatedly and was decided by Tomas Hertl with 3:24 left in the third, off a give-and-go with Colton Sissons.

Carolina could hardly have started better. Nikolaj Ehlers scored 25 seconds in and added a breakaway backhand later in the first for a 2-0 lead. Vegas answered through a Shea Theodore point shot that deflected in off Eric Robinson, then Ivan Barbashev tied it early in the second off a Jack Eichel feed, and William Karlsson put the Golden Knights ahead. Brett Howden made it 4-3 just 81 seconds into the third before Shayne Gostisbehere levelled it – and then Hertl settled it.

It was the first Stanley Cup Final game ever to feature goals inside the opening 30 seconds of both the first and second periods. The two teams combined for 50 shots and neither goaltender was at his best: Carter Hart and Frederik Andersen made just 41 saves between them, and Hart was beaten short side on Gostisbehere’s equalizer. How much rope each has tonight is a live question.

Vegas has now won seven consecutive playoff games and is a win from taking a stranglehold before the series shifts to T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights are also expected to have a full lineup available. Carolina, 12-1 coming into this round, has not lost consecutive games since the second round and has been at its best when it slows a game down – something it never managed on Tuesday.

Prediction: Carolina tightens up and steals it late – Hurricanes even the series before the trip west.

Remaining Stanley Cup Final Schedule

After tonight, the series moves to Las Vegas for Game 3 on Saturday, June 6 and Game 4 on Tuesday, June 9. If required, Game 5 returns to Raleigh on Thursday, June 11, Game 6 goes back to Vegas on Sunday, June 14, and Game 7 would be in Carolina on Wednesday, June 17.

Every game starts at 8:00 PM ET and airs on ABC in the United States, with Sportsnet, CBC and French-language TVA Sports in Canada.

Carolina has been the best team in these playoffs by record, but Vegas has the series lead and the momentum. Tonight decides whether this becomes a short series or a long one.
