🏒 Game of the Day: Vegas Golden Knights vs. Carolina Hurricanes (Game 5)

8:00 PM ET | ABC (US) · Sportsnet / CBC / TVA Sports (Canada) · Lenovo Center, Raleigh

Carolina got the road win it needed, taking Game 4 by a 5-3 score, and captain Jordan Staal was the reason. The 37-year-old, in his 20th season, scored twice – including the go-ahead goal in the third period, chipping the puck over a diving Carter Hart’s glove while falling to the ice – and now has five goals in this Final. Jackson Blake added a goal and an assist, Logan Stankoven scored, and Nikolaj Ehlers sealed it into the empty net.

The other headline was in the crease. Brandon Bussi, who had not played in two months before relieving Frederik Andersen in Game 3, got the start and became the first goaltender since 1961 to win his playoff debut in a Stanley Cup Final. Rod Brind’Amour said Andersen simply needed a break and has declined to name a Game 5 starter beyond confirming everyone is available.

Vegas has its own goaltending question, though John Tortorella insists he has none. Carter Hart has become the first goaltender in Stanley Cup Final history to allow at least four goals in each of the first four games – and two of those were wins, which says everything about how strange this series has been. The Golden Knights have also outscored Carolina 9-1 in second periods, yet find themselves level.

Every game so far has featured a multi-goal lead evaporating. Carolina erased a four-goal deficit in Game 3, Vegas came back from 3-1 down in Game 4, and both teams have had leads late in regulation slip away. Taylor Hall says the Hurricanes feel their game has trended upward all series and that they are fit enough to go as long as it takes.

Prediction: Carolina rides the Lenovo Center crowd – Hurricanes take Game 5 and move within one win of the Cup.

Remaining Stanley Cup Final Schedule

Game 6 is Sunday, June 14 in Las Vegas and offers the first chance for a Cup-clinching win. If the series goes the distance, Game 7 would be back at Lenovo Center on Wednesday, June 17 – the home-ice advantage Carolina reclaimed on Tuesday.

Both games start at 8:00 PM ET on ABC in the United States, with Sportsnet, CBC and French-language TVA Sports in Canada.

Four games, four one- or two-goal finishes, two overtimes and a series that has refused to follow any script. Tonight, one of these teams finally gets to within a single win of the Stanley Cup.
