New Jersey Devils vs Colorado Avalanche Preview, What to Watch
When the Colorado Avalanche host the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night, they might have a crucial player return after struggling during the 4 Nations Face-Off break.
Although Colorado coach Jared Bednar would not fully commit to writing his number on one of the team's lines, winger Valeri Nichushkin worked with the squad on Tuesday and might make a comeback.
Although he hasn't been available much this season, Nichushkin has been a powerhouse when he does play. While serving a suspension, he missed his team's first 17 games until the middle of November. He came back to participate in 21 games, scoring 11 goals and dishing out six assists, but he hasn't played since December 31 because of a lower-body ailment.
His offense has been missed by Colorado, particularly in the two games since the break. The Avalanche's attempts to move above the Western Conference wild-card race were further hampered by the fact that they only managed one goal in each of their losses against Nashville and St. Louis.
With 11 goals this season, Nichushkin is tied for sixth place among the team's current players despite missing 38 games. Nathan MacKinnon, the current Most Valuable Player, leads Colorado with 87 points (21 goals and a league-high 66 assists).
Martin Necas has 64 points (20 goals, 44 assists), Artturi Lehkonen has 34 points (23 goals, 11 assists), and Cale Makar leads all NHL defenseman in goals and points (22 goals, 42 assists).
The Avalanche will begin a six-game, 12-day homestand on Wednesday, their first home game since February 2.
They take on a New Jersey squad that just defeated Nashville 5-0, continuing the Devils' inconsistent play. New Jersey is currently in third place in the Metropolitan Division and has not won or lost in a row since the end of January.
Jesper Bratt (17 goals, 51 assists) and Jack Hughes (26 goals, 42 assists) lead New Jersey. Bratt represented Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, while Hughes represented the United States.
The only other Devils player to score 20 goals this season is Nico Hischier (24 goals, 22 assists).

The Devils' erratic play continues as they play a New Jersey team that just defeated Nashville 5-0. Since the end of January, New Jersey, which is presently in third position in the Metropolitan Division, has not experienced a consecutive victory or defeat.

Vancouver Canucks vs Los Angeles Kings Preview, What to Watch
In a close game, the Los Angeles Kings discovered another forward combination to increase their offensive output, but it's uncertain if Adrian Kempe, Kevin Fiala, and Quinton Byfield will stick together against the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday.
In the second period of Monday night's game against the visiting Vegas Golden Knights, Kempe joined Fiala and Byfield, and the three of them helped lead Los Angeles to a 5-2 victory.
With Kempe, Fiala, and Byfield all on the ice at the same time, the Kings scored four goals in a row in the third period.
When the Kings were having trouble scoring in the second period, Hiller first moved Kempe with Fiala and Byfield.
Hiller stayed with the line in the third because he felt Kempe gave it a spark in the final shifts of the stanza.
Byfield, who finished versus Vegas with a career-high four assists, said he and Fiala get along well with Kempe.
Anze Kopitar has been Kempe's line center for the majority of the season, but Hiller has struggled to add a competent left wing.
The Canucks and Calgary Flames are fighting for the final wild-card berth in the Western Conference, while the Kings are six points ahead of Vancouver for third place in the Pacific Division. Before Calgary defeated the Washington Capitals 3-1 on Tuesday, the Canucks had a one-point lead.
Vancouver has lost its first two games out of the break and only managed two goals, after winning its last three games before the 4 Nations Face-Off competition.
In Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Utah Hockey Club, Elias Pettersson, who has scored at least 32 goals for the Canucks in each of the last three seasons, was given credit for an assist. However, he failed to score in his 11th consecutive game, which left him at 11 for the season
