Ottawa Senators vs Tampa Bay Lightning Preview, What to Watch

As the 4 Nations Face-Off break draws closer, the Ottawa Senators are in a position of envy: they have a playoff spot in the fiercely contested Eastern Conference, despite some bad news this week about injuries.

But in the Atlantic Division, the Lightning are only two points behind the Senators, who are in third place. When Ottawa plays host Tampa Bay in the final of a two-game set on Thursday, it will attempt to put some more distance between the two teams.

On Tuesday, the Senators and Lightning faced off, and Tampa Bay emerged victorious with a 4-3 victory, ending Ottawa's five-game winning streak.

Despite this, Ottawa has a 10-3-1 record over the last 14 games, and defenseman Thomas Chabot has been in the middle of the Senators' winning run. In his last six games, he has one goal and five assists.

After Josh Norris suffered a mid-body injury over the weekend and was told he would miss "a couple weeks," Shane Pinto, a forward for the playoff-seeking Senators, left the game against Tampa Bay on Tuesday due to an upper-body injury after playing 1:57. Pinto never came back.

On Thursday night, Ottawa will do something it has never done before: play a second straight road game in the same city during a traditional regular season.

During the shortened 2020–21 campaign, the Senators attended several games in the same city, but this was because of COVID-19 safety and health precautions.

When the clubs play again, the Lightning will be looking to start a winning run, which Tampa Bay hasn't had since winning back-to-back games on January 16 and 18.

On Tuesday, the Lightning's Brandon Hagel scored the game-winning goal at 1:56 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie, and Ryan McDonagh placed the puck into an empty net at 18:25. Only fifteen seconds after McDonagh's goal, Drake Batherson of Ottawa scored.

Vegas Golden Knights vs New Jersey Devils Preview, What to Watch

On Thursday in Newark, New Jersey, the Vegas Golden Knights will take on the New Jersey Devils in an attempt to snap their longest losing skid in over three years.

The Golden Knights, who are currently second in the Pacific Division behind the Edmonton Oilers, have lost 11 of their last 14 games (3-8-3) and four straight (0-2-2) for the second time this season. Since March 8–15, 2022, the only season in the Golden Knights' history when they missed out on the Stanley Cup playoffs, Vegas has not dropped five games in a row.

Vegas is coming off a 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday and is playing the third game of a four-game road trip to the east.

Despite giving up 14 shots on goal, which is the fewest in the team's history, and putting 34 shots on Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin, the Golden Knights lost.

Halfway through the third period, Brock Nelson deflected a shot from Alexander Romanov to score the game-winning goal.

Vegas has only scored four goals in its last three games and has lost six of its last seven away games.

After a 3-2 shootout victory at Pittsburgh on Tuesday, New Jersey, which is currently ranked third in the Metropolitan Division, has won four of its last six games.

The Devils, who are only two points behind second-place Carolina going into Thursday, had two goals from Jack Hughes, a goal from Timo Meier in the eighth round in the shootout, and 25 saves from Nicolas Daws.

The last shootout was set up when New Jersey gave up goals to Kevin Hayes halfway through the third period and Rickard Rakell late in the second, despite leading 2-0 halfway through the second.

Washington Capitals vs Philadelphia Flyers Preview, What to Watch

The last second of the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers' most recent games was, of all places, a tornado of emotions.

When Alex Ovechkin leads the Washington Capitals against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, he will continue his quest for the NHL's all-time goals record.

Nic Dowd scored a goal and provided two assists in Washington's 6-3 victory over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, but Ovechkin's empty-netter with 0.1 seconds left was what truly made the fans happy.

It was Ovechkin's 878th goal in his illustrious career and his 25th of the season. To surpass Wayne Gretzky's all-time record of 894 goals, he needs 16 more goals.

For Washington, Aliaksei Protas contributed a goal and an assist, including a spectacular feed to Wilson for a short-handed goal in the second period.

Philadelphia, on the other hand, was on the other end of the emotional spectrum after its most recent game's last-minute drama. In a heartbreaking 3-2 road loss on Tuesday, the Flyers gave up a goal to Dylan Guenther of Utah with less than a second left in overtime.

The Flyers, who had been shut out in three straight games before Tuesday's loss, suffered their fourth straight loss. Rodrigo Abols' first NHL goal put the squad on the scoreboard 2:02 into the game, but ultimately, there wasn't enough offensive pressure.

The Flyers and Capitals will encounter four times this season, including this one. In their back-to-back October games, Washington prevailed in both encounters.

Ovechkin added an empty-netter in the second meeting after going scoreless in the first. In his 76 games versus the Flyers, he has scored 50 goals. The Carolina Hurricanes are the only team he has scored more goals against (51 in 91 games).

Utah Hockey Club vs Columbus Blue Jackets Preview, What to Watch

On Thursday night, the Columbus Blue Jackets will play the Utah Hockey Club in the first game of a four-game homestand in an attempt to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

Columbus ended a four-game road trip (2-2-0) on Tuesday with a 3-2 loss in Buffalo. The other goal for the Blue Jackets was added by Kent Johnson, while Ivan Provorov scored and provided an assist. With four goals and five assists, Johnson's point streak now stands at eight games.

With Zach Werenski and Dante Fabbro out of the lineup, Elvis Merzlikins made 18 saves for the Blue Jackets. Due to upper-body ailments, both were unable to play.

Kirill Marchenko, Columbus' top goal scorer, missed his first game of the season due to a broken jaw sustained during the team's 5-3 loss to Dallas on

Marchenko's injury is particularly concerning because the Blue Jackets are fighting for a postseason berth. Columbus was one point outside of the Eastern Conference's second and last wild-card berth going into Thursday.

However, the Blue Jackets, who are 17-5-3, have performed well at home. Since winning six straight from January 4–16, they are 4–4-1 overall.

The season's second and last meeting between Columbus and Utah is scheduled for Thursday. Last Friday, the Blue Jackets won 3-2 in overtime in Salt Lake City.

Utah ended a five-game losing streak with two goals from Dylan Guenther, including the game-winning goal with one second left in overtime (0-3-2).

After missing 12 games because of a lower-body ailment, Guenther made his comeback to the Utah lineup.

Karel Vejmelka made 18 saves for Utah, while Mikhail Sergachev scored a goal and provided two assists. Sergachev's score on Tuesday tied his career high of 10.

Utah finished Wednesday six points outside of a Western Conference wild-card berth. This season, Utah is 13-10-3 away from home and 4-4-2 overall.

In 52 games this season, Clayton Keller leads the squad with 39 assists and 57 points. With 18 goals apiece, Guenther and the Utah captain are tied for the team lead.

Vejmelka has made 30 starts this season and is 12-14-4 with a 2.46 goals-against average and a.910 save percentage. Vejmelka has a 2.48 GAA and a.900 save percentage in two career games versus the Blue Jackets.

In 35 starts this season, Merzlikins has a 19-13-3 record, a 2.96 goals-against average, and a.894 save percentage. In his six career games against the Arizona Coyotes, he is 2-2-1 with a 3.50 GAA and a.885 save percentage.

In the first meeting between the two teams, Daniil Tarasov made 32 saves while playing goal for Columbus versus Utah.

Carolina Hurricanes vs Minnesota Wild Preview, What to Watch

This season, the Minnesota Wild have been as successful away from home as they have been on the road. After a five-game road trip, they are back in their home building and will try to improve their hosting record when the Carolina Hurricanes come in on Thursday.

This season, the Wild are 20-7-3 away from home and 11-12-1 at Xcel Energy Center. In a number of their game's locations, the differences are striking.

They are only scoring 2.58 goals per game at home, which puts them in 31st place in the league as of Tuesday, and giving up 3.29 goals per game, which is seventh-highest in the league.

They have the worst penalty kill in the NHL on home ice (61.1 percent), have only scored 22 goals in the third period at home, and are 30th in the league.

In contrast, their 3.03 goals per game as visitors places them in 12th place, while their 2.47 goals against are the second-lowest in the league. With 38 third-period goals on the road, they are second in the NHL. On the road, the penalty kill isn't very effective, but it ranks 20th with a 77.1 percent success rate.

However, there is a slight lull before the Wild head home. They were outscored 9-0 after losing the last two games of the road trip, 3-0 on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins and 6-0 on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators.

With 46 points (18 goals, 28 assists) in 54 games, Marco Rossi has already surpassed his career high and is now second in team scoring behind injured standout Kirill Kaprizov (52 points). The 23-year-old Rossi is three goals away from tying his previous season's career high.

The Hurricanes are hoping to end their two-game losing streak when they get to Minnesota. They were shut out 3-0 on the road by the league-leading Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday after suffering a 4-2 home loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

The Hurricanes will be trying to get better on the power play, among other things. They are 1-for-25 in their last 10 games and went 0-for-2 versus Winnipeg.

Florida Panthers vs St. Louis Blues Preview, What to Watch

Two nights after failing to defeat one of the NHL's top-scoring teams, the struggling St. Louis Blues will have to face another one.

Following a 3-2 overtime setback to the Edmonton Oilers at home on Tuesday, the Blues will play the Florida Panthers on Thursday.

On its home ice, St. Louis led the Oilers 2-1 going into the last three minutes but let up a 6-on-5 goal when Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner was substituted out for an extra attacker.

With Connor McDavid setting up Connor Brown for the game-winning goal in overtime, Edmonton, which averages 3.28 goals per game, won the game after tying it with a goal from Leon Draisaitl with 2:14 remaining in regulation.

The Panthers, who are scoring 3.27 goals per game, will now take against the Blues. Leading the way have been forwards Aleksander Barkov (two goals, seven assists in six games) and Matthew Tkachuk (four goals, three assists in four games).

Nick Leddy, who battled off rust Tuesday after missing 49 games due to an injury, will help St. Louis defensively.

The Blues now have one of the most seasoned defensive units in the NHL thanks to his comeback. To join veterans Colton Parayko and Justin Faulk, St. Louis acquired Cam Fowler during the season and signed Ryan Suter in the offseason.

The Panthers lost 6-3 against the Capitals in Washington, ending a three-game winning streak. The Capitals caught the Panthers playing too aggressively in the attacking zone as the game was tied 2-2 entering the third period.

Florida defeated St. Louis 2-1 in overtime on December 20 at home. Barkov scored the game-winning goal in overtime and contributed an assist in regulation. 26 saves were made by Sergei Bobrovsky.

Colorado Avalanche vs Calgary Flames Preview, What to Watch

On Thursday, the Colorado Avalanche will travel to the Calgary Flames in an attempt to bounce back after a mediocre month-long run.

The Avalanche had been erratic for a while, but they started Wednesday with the top wild-card berth in the Western Conference and were only two points behind the injured Minnesota Wild for third place in the Central Division.

The fact that Colorado, which entered the game having won two straight shutouts, was unable to create any kind of comeback in a game that was 1-0 going into the third period just serves to increase the aggravation.

The fact that Colorado, which entered the game having won two straight shutouts, was unable to create any kind of comeback in a game that was 1-0 going into the third period just serves to increase the aggravation.

It was not the way to start a run of five straight away games that will be separated by the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off event, but it would have been a different story had the Avalanche scored every time rather than ringing shots off the post three times in the first period.

Following a dismal 6-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, the opening game of a three-game homestand, the Flames, who started Wednesday in the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference, are also trying to bounce back.

The Flames gave up two power-play goals and were beaten on three of Toronto's odd-man rushes, and penalties and turnovers were the main causes. The Flames made a number of poor mistakes as a result of their attempt to trade opportunities with the more skilled Maple Leafs, albeit fatigue may have played a role.

On the plus side, Joel Farabee, a rookie, scored his first goal since joining the Flames from the Philadelphia Flyers, and the team scored two power-play goals in back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Flames are now 10-for-28 in their last nine games.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Seattle Kraken Preview, What to Watch

The Maple Leafs defeated the host Calgary Flames 6-3 on Tuesday thanks to three goals from the Toronto forward.

Thursday night in Seattle will mark the start of the Maple Leafs' four-game Western tour. The teams will play for the second and last time this season during the regular season. Nylander scored twice as Toronto trounced the visiting Kraken 4-1 on October 31.

Goalie Joseph Woll made 23 saves, Auston Matthews contributed three assists, and Matthew Knies scored a goal and provided an assist against Calgary.

Nylander's hat-trick put him second in the NHL with 33 goals through Tuesday, behind Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl (37).

Due to a lower-body ailment, forward Mitch Marner was unable to play for the Maple Leafs. With 70 points (16 goals, 54 assists), Marner leads Toronto in scoring and, as of Tuesday, is tied for fourth place in the league.

Tuesday, the Kraken overcame a two-goal hole in the third period to lose 5–4 in a shootout to Detroit, who had won seven straight games.

Seattle, which is 1-2-1 on its five-game homestand that ends Thursday, had two goals from Shane Wright and 36 saves from Joey Daccord.

Vancouver Canucks vs San Jose Sharks Preview, What to Watch

When the Vancouver Canucks visit the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, they hope to continue their lopsided rivalry.

Since the 2019–20 season, Vancouver has played 15 games against the Sharks, going 14–1-0. The clubs have won their first two meetings this season, 3-2 in San Jose on November 2 and 4-3 in Vancouver on December 23, as part of their recent run of success.

The Canucks are gaining ground in their pursuit of a postseason berth after going 4-1-1 in their previous six games. The Colorado Avalanche, who own the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference, were defeated by Vancouver 3-0 in a shutout on Tuesday.

During a challenging season, former All-Star Thatcher Demko recorded his first shutout with 25 saves. His season debut was delayed until December 10 due to a knee ailment, and prior to Tuesday, he was just 4-6-3 with a 3.26 goals-against average in 14 appearances.

On Thursday, the Canucks might start Kevin Lankinen again or go with Demko, who is a hot hand. With a 13-3-3 record and a 2.34 GAA in 19 games, Lankinen is the second-best goalie in the NHL when it comes to road victories.

Due to a lower-body injury, Quinn Hughes will miss his third consecutive game. The standout defensive player leads the Canucks in points (59) and assists (45).

Jake DeBrusk scored one goal and provided an assist against Colorado, giving him the lead with 19 goals for the Canucks. In the 17 games between Tuesday's game and his last two-point showing on December 28, the streaky forward only managed four points (two goals, two assists).

The Sharks have a 4-18-1 record over their last 23 games and are currently worst in the NHL.

The Sharks' first game since Cody Ceci and Mikael Granlund were traded to the Dallas Stars on Saturday was Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Although rookie sensation Macklin Celebrini leads all current Sharks with 39 points (17 goals, 22 assists), Granlund remains San Jose's team leader with 45 points.

Even though Celebrini missed 12 games due to a lower-body ailment earlier this season, he is still vying for the lead in points among all NHL rookies.

Alexander Wennberg and Ty Dellandrea are doubtful because of upper-body ailments. Wennberg has missed the last two games and Dellandrea the last four for San Jose.

Vitek Vanecek was Alexander Georgiev's backup versus Montreal, but he hasn't played since breaking his cheekbone on December 14. Vanecek is anticipated to play in at least one of the Sharks' two games before to the league's break for the 4 Nations Face-Off, so he might make his ice come Thursday.
