New Jersey Devils vs Buffalo Sabres Preview, What to Watch
For the first time in over four months, the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres will square off on Sunday afternoon. Fans will be reminded that their early games this season were a preview of what's ahead for both clubs.
When New Jersey visits Buffalo in the season's final game between the two teams, the Devils will look to build on one of their most decisive victories of the year, while the Sabres will aim to play spoiler on Sunday afternoon.
The Devils haven't played since defeating the visiting Philadelphia Flyers 5-0 on Wednesday. The Sabres defeated the Nashville Predators 4-3 on Friday night to win the second of a four-game homestand.
Ondrej Palat, Luke Hughes, Nathan Bastian, and Dawson Mercer all scored goals in a 13-minute period during the second period for New Jersey, who recovered from a 4-2 setback to the Flyers on Monday night, after the Devils were outshot 10-7 in a scoreless first period on Wednesday.
The triumph Since the Devils' 5-0 victory against the New York Rangers on December 23, Wednesday's game was the most lopsided. After losing nine of eleven (2-6-3) from December 28 to January 19, New Jersey has since won three of four (3-1-0).
After defeating the Sabres twice in a row in the Czech Republic on October 4 and 5, the Devils, who have only qualified for the playoffs twice in the last 12 seasons, have been over.500 since the 2024–25 season began.
As of Saturday, New Jersey was seven points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who now occupy the second and last wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference, and five points ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are vying for third place in the Metropolitan Division.
The Sabres had a 1-4-1 start to the season after their back-to-back losses. They went 10-5-0 from October 19 to November 23 until their prospects of making the playoffs vanished during a 13-game losing run (0-10-3) from November 27 to December 21.
Despite going 9-7-1 since December 23, the Sabres are still stuck in last place in the Eastern Conference with 45 points. Six of those victories have come against teams that were within four points of a postseason berth going into Saturday.
In its last three victories, Buffalo has battled back from a deficit. Before the Predators scored three goals in less than 12 minutes to bridge the first two quarters, the Sabres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on Friday.
With 7:34 remaining in the second, Jason Zucker knotted the score, and with 2:04 left in the third, Jiri Kulich scored his second goal of the game to give the Sabres the lead.
Philadelphia Flyers vs Colorado Avalanche Preview, What to Watch
The Philadelphia Flyers will visit Denver on Sunday after the Colorado Avalanche thrashed a struggling squad on Friday.
In their first home game since making the three-team trade of Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes on January 24, the Avalanche defeated St. Louis 5-0. Jack Drury and Martin Necas, the two players they acquired in the trade, have already had an impact.
Drury has two goals with his new team, while Necas has five points in four games since joining Colorado, including a goal on Friday night. Necas has gotten along well with the NHL's top scorer and has played on the top line with Nathan MacKinnon.
Prior to defeating the Blues, Colorado had a 4-5-1 record in its last ten games. Cale Makar, who leads all NHL defensemen with 19 goals and is second with 57 points, scored one of the two goals Friday night as the power play, which had been quiet, came alive.
Necas finished Friday night tied for 10th place in the league in scoring with 60 points (17 goals, 43 assists), while MacKinnon recorded his NHL-high 60th assist and 79 points. With Rantanen out, Artturi Lehkonen is fourth in points (30) and leads the team with 21 goals.
On November 18, the Avalanche defeated the opponents 3-2 in Philadelphia with to two goals from Makar. Rantanen contributed two assists to the victory.
After trading forwards Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee to Calgary on Friday in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, and draft picks, the Flyers are also adjusting to roster adjustments. Prior to the deal, Frost had 25 points, which put him fourth on the club in scoring.
According to general manager Daniel Briere, the agreement allows Pelletier to try out a new team and system and affords him cap flexibility in the offseason.
Matvei Michkov is in second place with 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists), Owen Tippett has 30 points (14 goals, 16 assists), and Travis Konecny leads the Flyers with 58 points (21 goals, 37 assists).
Philadelphia is without a goal going into Sunday. The Flyers have lost four of their last five games, been shut out in their last two, and been outscored 19-6.
Philadelphia brought up forward Jacob Gaucher and defenseman Emil Andrae prior to the start of their two-game road trip.
Both teams are attempting to move up in their respective conference rankings, even though there is still a lot of the season left. Colorado presently has a five-point lead for the top wild-card berth in the West, while the Flyers came into Saturday five points out of the second and final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Montreal Canadiens vs Anaheim Ducks Preview, What to Watch
On Sunday afternoon, the Montreal Canadiens begin a three-game road trip to California against the Anaheim Ducks, which pits two clubs still in the running for wild-card places against one another.
The teams will play each other twice throughout the regular season. The Canadiens won the first one, 3-2, in a shootout in Montreal on December 9 thanks to a goal and an assist from Patrik Laine.
After splitting a two-game road trip that started with a 6-4 victory at Seattle and ended with a 4-1 loss at Calgary on Thursday, Anaheim, which is just 11-12-2 at the Honda Center, returns home.
Prior to the defeat by the Flames, the Ducks had tied their season-long winning streak with three consecutive victories. Frank Vatrano's short-handed goal halfway through the first period gave them a 1-0 lead, but Calgary rallied for four goals in a row over the next two periods.
With 130 goals scored, Anaheim is bottom in the NHL. During their three-game winning streak, the team outscored its opponents 16–7. After losing to the Flames, the Ducks dropped to 1-24-4 when scoring two goals or less.
Before the 4 Nations Face-Off break, two of Anaheim's final three games will be played at home. Nine points separated the Ducks from the second and last Western Conference wild-card place going into Saturday.
Vatrano (15 goals, 14 assists) and Ryan Strome (seven goals, 22 assists) are tied for second place at 29 points, while LaCombe is fifth on the squad with 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists). With 39 points (16 goals, 23 assists), Troy Terry leads Anaheim.
Montreal has five games left in an eight-day stretch before the break, and going into Saturday, they were four points off of a wild-card berth in the East.
After a 4-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild at home on Thursday, the Canadiens go to California on a four-game losing streak (0-3-1). Eight of Montreal's 19 shots on goal came in the first two periods.
Columbus Blue Jackets vs Dallas Stars Preview, What to Watch
The Dallas Stars are thriving despite an excess of injuries.
The Columbus Blue Jackets, who are on the rise, could present a difficult test for them next.
By preventing the Blue Jackets from winning four straight games on Sunday, the host Stars can score their fifth consecutive victory.
Dallas started the game on Saturday with the fourth-most points (67) in the Western Conference, despite being without crucial defensemen Miro Heiskanen (knee) and Nils Lundkvist (season-ending shoulder surgery), as well as experienced forwards Tyler Seguin (hip) and Mason Marchment (face). Since December 23, the Stars have a 14-4-1 record and are still winning games.
Despite only managing 16 shots on goal, the Stars defeated Vancouver 5-3 at home on Friday thanks to two goals and an assist from Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz.
For the Stars to succeed, Robertson and Hintz must play at a high level. In the last 25 games this season, Robertson has scored 34 of his 49 points. Hintz, meanwhile, has contributed five assists and three goals in the last four games.
The Stars won each game even though Jake Oettinger, who stopped 26 shots against Vancouver, has given up three goals in each of his last three starts.
In his last 12 starts, he has won 10 of them. Since stopping all 33 shots in a 2-0 victory over St. Louis on January 25, backup Casey DeSmith has not been in action.
The Upstart Columbus, on the other hand, is 14-4-2 since December 19 and now has a wild-card berth in the East. The Blue Jackets have won the opening two games of a four-game trip and three straight in OT.
At Utah on Friday, Columbus fell behind 2-0 early in the third period before goals from Kent Johnson and Kirill Marchenko forced OT. Zach Werenski, a standout defenseman, scored early in the extra period to give the team a 3-2 victory.
Werenski is tied with Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar, two of the NHL's top defensemen, for the most points this season with a team-high 57 points. But in his seven career appearances in Dallas, Werenski has only contributed two assists and no goals.
In the last four games, Marchenko has scored three of his team-high 21 goals.
Daniil Tarasov, a Columbus backup, stopped 31 of 33 shots against Utah, but Elvis Merzlikins is probably going to return to the net for this game. With a 1.66 goals-against average and a.939 save percentage, Merzlikins has led the Blue Jackets to a 5-1-0 start.
In return for Dallas' first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2025, the Stars acquired defenseman Cody Ceci and winger Mikael Granlund from the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
The Sharks will get the Stars' 2025 third-round pick if Dallas makes it to the Stanley Cup Final. San Jose will be selected in the fourth round if the Stars are unable to make it to the Stanley Cup Final.
New York Islanders vs Florida Panthers Preview, What to Watch
When the New York Islanders visit the Florida Panthers on Sunday, they will attempt to win eight straight games.
After defeating Tampa Bay 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, New York moved within three points of the Lightning for the second Eastern Conference wild card, advancing their bid for a wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference.
Florida, meanwhile, defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1 on Saturday afternoon and will now try to win three in a row.
Tony DeAngelo gave New York the victory with a goal 33 seconds into overtime. It was DeAngelo's first goal since the Islanders signed him as a free agent on January 24.
The Islanders also had goals from Adam Boqvist and Kyle Palmieri, and two assists from Simon Holmstrom. 28 saves were made by Ilya Sorokin. On Friday, Boqvist was participating in his first game for the Islanders following his claim off waivers.
Holmstrom extended his point run to three games with five points (three goals, two assists) during that time, while Palmieri scored goals in consecutive games following a 14-game goal drought.
After blocking a shot in the last minute of regulation, Mathew Barzal walked to the locker room, and Scott Mayfield of New York departed the game in the second period due to an injury and did not return. Following the game, coach Patrick Roy had no updates on either player.
Playing only its second game in six days, Florida was behind 1-0 after seven seconds on Saturday when Landon Slaggert scored the fastest goal in Blackhawks history to start a game.
The Panthers had two goals and two assists from Sam Reinhart and one goal and one assist from Carter Verhaeghe. Sergei Bobrovsky made 24 saves, and captain Aleksander Barkov recorded his 200th career multi-point performance with two assists.
Reinhart scored at least 30 goals in four straight seasons, becoming him the first player in Panthers history to do so.
Maurice's 900 regular-season victories made him the fourth head coach in NHL history. The others were Barry Trotz (914), Joel Quenneville (969), and Scotty Bowman (1,244).
Vegas Golden Knights vs New York Rangers Preview, What to Watch
Although J.T. Miller's debut was successful on an individual basis on Saturday, his two goals were unable to help his new side, the New York Rangers, overcome yet another strong defensive showing.
The Rangers hope Miller's first home game of his second stay with the team ends better than their previous three-game losing run (7-0-3) against the struggling Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday.
After a run of games in which they gave up more than three goals just twice, the Rangers have lost by a score of 15–7. They lost to the host Boston Bruins 6-3 on Saturday, capping off a difficult week.
Miller will make his Rangers home debut on Sunday for the first time since February 25, 2018. After spending more than five seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, he was moved to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday.
Miller tied the score halfway through the first period on Saturday and added a power-play goal 35 seconds into the third.
The Golden Knights are currently on a 3-6-3 run, and they lost 2-1 to the Rangers on January 11. Vegas had won 13 of 15 games before to this skid.
On Thursday, the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated Vegas 2-1 in overtime despite Tomas Hertl's goal 4:58 into the game. Before losing to the Dallas Stars 4-3 in overtime two nights prior, the Golden Knights had taken a two-goal lead just 1:54 into the game.
Brandon Saad left the St. Louis Blues and signed a one-year contract with the Golden Knights the day after the team's defeat by Columbus.
With the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015, Saad won the Stanley Cup twice. Prior to joining the Golden Knights, he played 43 games with St. Louis, scoring seven goals and 16 points.
St. Louis Blues vs Utah Hockey Club Preview, What to Watch
In the race for the Western Conference playoffs, the Utah Hockey Club has been slipping. A more noticeable downturn has set in for the St. Louis Blues.
When both teams get together on Sunday at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, they will be feeling a great deal of urgency.
Utah's record in the last four games is 0-2-2. It had suffered a 3-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday in overtime at home.
Utah led 2-1 in the third period of both games but was unable to seal the win.
Despite earning a point in each of the previous two games, the Hockey Club did make improvement.
When the game is on the line, Utah's team needs to convert effort into goals, according to coach Andre Tourigny.
The Blues have dropped their last four games by a total of 16–4. During that stretch, they lost their first two shutout games of the season.
St. Louis lost to the Colorado Avalanche 5-0 on Friday night in Denver after falling behind 4-0 in the first period.
Additionally, the Blues haven't displayed the mental tenacity necessary to pull off comebacks like they did earlier in the season.
The first two meetings between these teams, on November 7 in St. Louis and January 18 in Salt Lake City, were won by Utah 4–2. Born and raised in the St. Louis region, Keller has 34 points and a plus-13 rating in 30 career games versus the Blues, along with a goal and four assists in those games.
Detroit Red Wings vs Vancouver Canucks Preview, What to Watch
The Red Wings and Dylan Larkin are targeted by the new-look Canucks.
The Vancouver Canucks, who went for a three-game road trip last week, will look very different when they host the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.
In exchange for veteran forward Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini, and a 2025 first-round protected draft pick, the Canucks sent forward J.T. Miller, defenseman Erik Brannstrom, and defense prospect Jackson Dorrington to the New York Rangers on Friday.
The Canucks also traded winger Drew O'Connor, defender Vincent Desharnais, and forward Danton Heinen to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday in exchange for forward Marcus Pettersson and defenseman Vincent Desharnais and a 2025 first-round selection.
Given that Vancouver had been trying to relocate the irate Miller for a few months, those deals were not shocking.
General manager Patrik Allvin informed reporters on Saturday that the newest Canucks are anticipated to visit town for the game on Sunday. He clarified, though, that coach Rick Tocchet will choose whether any or all of them play against a Red Wings squad that has points in its past six games (5-0-1) and won its last five games.
Despite rumors of potential deals, Vancouver won three straight games before losing to the Dallas Stars 5-3 on Friday. On Friday, Jake DeBrusk of the Canucks scored his 18th goal of the season, which leads the team.
Quinn Hughes, a defenseman, assisted on DeBrusk's score to increase his point streak to eight.
The third game of Detroit's four-game road trip is at Vancouver. On Saturday, the Red Wings defeated the Calgary Flames 3-1.
In the victory, captain Dylan Larkin scored his 23rd goal of the season, which was a team high. Since the Christmas break, the center has scored in back-to-back games and amassed 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists).
Despite being kept off the scoreboard in the last two games, Lucas Raymond leads the club with 36 assists and 56 points.
The Red Wings have a 13-4-1 record since Dec. 27 and have played significantly better hockey since Todd McLellan took over as coach following the holiday break, in addition to the current streaks.
Under McLellan, the Red Wings will play on consecutive days for the second time. On January 18–19, they suffered defeats while traveling to Tampa Bay and Dallas. Detroit was 0-9-1 and had not won any of the back-to-back legs before to Saturday's victory.
Neither Larkin nor McLellan seemed happy with the Red Wings' performance, particularly at the beginning of Saturday's game, even though they continued their winning streak.
