Chicago Blackhawks vs Florida Panthers Preview, What to Watch

Despite the fact that the Florida Panthers only managed two consecutive victories in January, head coach Paul Maurice appears certain that the reigning Stanley Cup champions are on the right track.

The Panthers will meet the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday afternoon in Sunrise, Florida, in an attempt to keep making small steps toward another lengthy postseason run.

Florida defeated the struggling Los Angeles Kings 3-0 on Wednesday to start their three-game homestand.

Sergei Bobrovsky tied John Vanbiesbrouck for the third-most saves in Panthers history with 29 saves, his second shutout of the season and 13th overall.

Matthew Tkachuk also contributed two assists and a goal for the Panthers, marking his second three-point effort in the last three games.

In addition to being glad to see his star player producing, Maurice expressed his satisfaction with the team's overall growth.

Florida's effort against the Kings, who had lost the first two games of their road trip and were in dire need of a victory, particularly thrilled Tkachuk.

The Panthers haven't dropped more than two straight games since their season-long four-game losing skid, which began on November 21 with a 3-1 loss to the Blackhawks.

Chicago in particular, which has a 4-11-3 record over its last 18 games, has been leaking since shortly before Christmas. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, and Montreal Canadiens were among the strong opponents the Blackhawks defeated, but they haven't been able to build on those victories with a second consecutive triumph.

Chicago defeated Tampa Bay 4-1 on Tuesday to start their current three-game tour. However, the Blackhawks lost 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday because they were unable to rebuild that performance.

With two goals and two assists against the Lightning, Chicago second-year center Connor Bedard extended his point streak to four games and now has points in 16 of his last 18 games.

New York Rangers vs Boston Bruins Preview, What to Watch

The Boston Bruins are hoping for consistency as defenseman Charlie McAvoy returns from injury as the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off break draws near.

When the Bruins play the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon, he will play his second game back after missing seven because of an upper-body ailment.

However, McAvoy's comeback was a bust as the Winnipeg Jets defeated Boston 6-2 on Thursday thanks to four goals in the third period. It was the Bruins' second consecutive defeat and their 14th game this season where they let up five goals or more.

The problem has been exacerbated by their incapacity to generate momentum from their own objectives.

Eleven seconds into the third period, Elias Lindholm of Boston scored the game-winning goal, but Winnipeg replied twice to take a 4-2 lead and never looked back.

The Bruins will need to improve defensively if they want to turn things around, even if they started Thursday in a wild-card slot in the Eastern Conference. After a 5-1-1 record, the team lost back-to-back by a total score of 13-4.

Boston's captain, Brad Marchand, who has three points in a row and scored the team's opening goal Thursday, knows his squad must persevere.

The Rangers, who are now four points behind the Bruins in the playoff standings, will be the opponent for that next game. New York has lost back-to-back games after a 6-0-2 run.

Since the Rangers were shut out 4-0 by the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, coach Peter Laviolette's team has not played in a game.

Jimmy Vesey, a native of Massachusetts, is having a terrible time as the Rangers try to start the new month off well.

Vesey has been a healthy scratch for eight consecutive games and has 609 NHL games under his belt. He recently told the New York Post that he feels like he has "no role or purpose on this team."

Laviolette responded, "Jimmy is a key member of this squad. He has demonstrated that. We've chosen a lineup for the time being, and we simply ask the players who aren't in it to keep up their good work."

Vesey has only scored three goals this season and hasn't played since January 11; Adam Edstrom, Sam Carrick, and 22-year-old Matt Rempe have taken his place in the fourth line.

Nashville Predators vs Pittsburgh Penguins Preview, What to Watch

New York Islanders vs Tampa Bay Lightning Preview, What to Watch

The New York Islanders, who are now playing better than any other NHL team, will travel to Tampa Bay to play the Lightning on Saturday night in an attempt to win seven straight games.

After closing January 9-3-0, New York has risen up the Eastern Conference standings and now holds the league's longest winning streak. The Islanders were four points behind Columbus for the last wild-card slot going into Friday.

In their ascent from the lower echelons of the East standings, they have surpassed the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Montreal.

Ilya Sorokin, the goalie for New York, recorded his third shutout with 23 saves on Thursday night in Philadelphia, helping his team win 3-0 and collect two more points.

With around ten minutes left, Kyle Palmieri scored the Islanders' third goal to seal the victory. For the second-line right winger, it was his first goal in 15 games since a 7-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres at home on December 23.

Marc Gatcomb, a rookie who scored his first goal in his seventh NHL game on Thursday, also gave New York a goal.

On Sunday in Sunrise, Florida, the Islanders will finish their back-to-back set against the Florida Panthers.

In the meantime, the Lightning won for just the second time in their past six games (2-4-0) on Thursday, blanking the visiting Los Angeles Kings 3-0 to end a two-game losing streak.

Given Tampa Bay's future, Thursday's triumph was extremely important. The Ottawa Senators, who recently passed Tampa Bay for third place in the Atlantic Division, will play the Lightning in a two-game series after Saturday.

The victory also saved coach Jon Cooper's club from suffering its second poor month of the season. The Lightning finished January 7-8-1 after going 5-6-2 in November.

Andrei Vasilevskiy of Tampa Bay had his 37th career shutout on Thursday, his third this season. Protecting the star backstop, who was doubtful to play because of an illness, required keeping the puck out of the defensive zone.

Minnesota Wild vs Ottawa Senators Preview, What to Watch

The Ottawa Senators are still a formidable team at home, but the Minnesota Wild are continuing their season-long success away from home.

The Wild hope to prevent the Senators from winning their fifth consecutive game at home on Saturday night, while they look to win five straight away games.

Minnesota is 20-5-3 on the road, which is an NHL-best record. They have gone 3-0 on their current five-game trip and outscored their last four opponents 14-4. In the Wild's 4-0 victory at Montreal on Thursday, Marc-Andre Fleury, a native of Quebec, recorded his 76th career shutout by stopping all 19 shots he faced.

The Wild won their second consecutive game after the team revealed that star Kirill Kaprizov will be sidelined for at least four weeks due to a lower-body ailment that requires surgery. Frederick Gaudreau and Marco Rossi each scored a goal and provided an assist against the Canadiens.

Filip Gustavsson may return to the Minnesota net after saving 50 of 53 shots to win the first two games on this road run, even though backup Fleury has a 2.42 goals-against average and a.919 save percentage while winning three of his last five starts.

Gaudreau scored a goal and Gustavsson recorded 34 saves in the Wild's 3-1 home defeat to the Senators on December 29.

Despite winning on the road that evening, Ottawa's 15-7-2 home record is a key factor in its Eastern Conference playoff standing. The Senators have a 10-2-1 home record since November 25 and are now 5-0-1 after defeating Washington 5-4 in overtime on Thursday.

Ottawa hopes to sweep its four-game homestand on Saturday, with goals from Ridly Greig and Jake Sanderson on the unit play and goals from Josh Norris and Shane Pinto each on the shorthand.

Greig and Norris, who scored three points on Thursday, both scored at Minnesota earlier in the season. Meanwhile, in his last 11 games, Pinto has four goals and six assists.

After giving up a goal each in his last three games, Ottawa's Anton Forsberg saved 31 of 35 shots against the Capitals. But it's probable that Linus Ullmark may make his first appearance in the Senators' net since sustaining a back injury on December 22 in Edmonton.

Ullmark was 7-0-0 with a 1.08 goals-against average and a.963 save percentage during an eight-start run at the time of the injury. In December, Leevi Merilainen (7-3-1, 2.19 GAA), who has filled in for Ullmark, recorded 30 saves against Minnesota.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Edmonton Oilers Preview, What to Watch

When the Toronto Maple Leafs play the Edmonton Oilers on the road on Saturday night, they are on a three-game losing streak.

Toronto has only managed one goal in each of the last three games, demonstrating a lack of offensive production.

The Maple Leafs actually outshoot the Wild 33–25 in the game, despite what their coach said.

"But we had chances," Berube continued. The simple truth is that scoring is going through a difficult period right now, so you just have to fight through it."

In each of the last three losses, the Maple Leafs have outshot their opponents.

After scoring goals in five straight games, superstar Auston Matthews has now been kept off the scoresheet for two games in a row. In just one of the 14 games prior, he was held useless (11 goals, 8 assists).

The Oilers have won four straight games going into Saturday's matchup, but they lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

Against Detroit, Edmonton was a little unlucky to run into a hot goalie. From the Red Wings' crease, Alex Lyon dominated the contest, denying 45 of Edmonton's 47 attempts on goal.

Despite taking an early 2-0 lead in the first period, the Oilers struggled to overcome Lyon in the second and third periods and overtime.

Before the Red Wings stormed back, Jeff Skinner, who scored the Oilers' second goal of the game, thought his side had plenty of chances to score another.

The Oilers' first goal on the power play was scored by Leon Draisaitl, who now leads the NHL with 36 goals.

Connor McDavid, Draisaitl's running companion, helped set up the goal and enters the game against his home team on a six-game point streak (five goals, four assists).

Having grown up in a Toronto suburb, McDavid has faced the Maple Leafs 24 times in his career, tallying 12 goals and 25 assists in those games.

Over the past ten games, the Oilers have a 7-2-1 record and have not given up more than three goals during that time.

The Oilers, who are 3-1-1 so far, will play their final six-game homestand in this all-Canadian matchup, while the Maple Leafs will begin a four-game Western Conference road trip on Saturday.

Between these two great teams, Toronto has won nine of the last twelve matches (9-2-1).

Los Angeles Kings vs Carolina Hurricanes Preview, What to Watch

Two teams are heading in different directions for Saturday night's game between the Los Angeles Kings and the host Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Kings have lost eight of their previous ten games, while the Hurricanes have won six of their last seven.

In his third game with his new organization, star winger Mikko Rantanen scored Carolina's first goal as the team upset the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Thursday night.

Last Friday's unexpected blockbuster trade between the Blackhawks and the Colorado Avalanche sent Martin Necas and Jack Drury to the Avalanche while acquiring Taylor Hall and Rantanen from the Hurricanes.

After Thursday night's loss to the host Tampa Bay Lightning, the Kings are 0-3-1 in their last four games and have been shut out in two straight games.

They have gone 162:55 without a goal since the first period of their 5-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night, and they fell by the same 3-0 score against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night. And Quinton Byfield was given credit for Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider's own goal.

On Thursday, Byfield seemed to score in the second period, but the goal was reversed after a video review showed the play was offside.

Winnipeg Jets vs Washington Capitals Preview, What to Watch

On Saturday night, the Winnipeg Jets will travel to the Washington Capitals to play the two teams with the greatest point totals in the NHL.

The Jets, who lead the Western Conference, defeated the Boston Bruins 6-2 on Thursday to score their fifth consecutive victory and eighth in their past ten games.

In turn, the East-leading Capitals overcame a late two-goal deficit in a 5-4 overtime road defeat to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday to earn at least a point for the fourteenth time in 15 games (10-1-4). After a season-long five-game road trip with a 3-1-1 record, Washington returns home.

After winning 4-1 in Montreal on Tuesday and finishing strongly in Boston, Winnipeg has had a terrific start to their three-game road trip.

Mark Scheifele broke a tie with Patrik Laine for third-most goals in Jets/Atlanta Thrashers history on Thursday by scoring twice to reach the 30-goal mark for the fourth season. With 328 goals, Scheifele and Ilya Kovalchuk share the franchise's record.

Scott Arniel, the coach of Winnipeg, was eager to acknowledge Scheifele's contributions.

Kyle Connor, who tied Kovalchuk for the franchise record by tying the scoring record and reaching the 30-goal mark for the seventh time in his career, is another player who is difficult to defend.

Superstar captain Alex Ovechkin, who holds numerous Capitals records in his own right, scored Thursday's game-winning goal with 6:59 left in the third period. He came within 19 goals of breaking the NHL record held by Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky with the goal, which was his team-high 23rd of the season and his 876th overall.

Ovechkin increased his team-leading point total to 49 with two assists and two goals from Dylan Strome. After a 10-game slump, Strome has scored three goals in his last two games.

Speaking of droughts, Connor McMichael scored in the second quarter to snap an 11-game goalless streak. The goal matched the career high he set the previous season and was his 18th of the year.

Detroit Red Wings vs Calgary Flames Preview, What to Watch

The updated appearance The Calgary Flames will host the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday in an attempt to secure a postseason berth.

The Philadelphia Flyers traded forward Morgan Frost and winger Joel Farabee to Calgary during Thursday's 4-1 victory against the Anaheim Ducks. Frost and Farabee are anticipated to be second- and third-line skaters, respectively. Calgary sent two draft picks, young forward Jakob Pelletier, and struggling Andrei Kuzmenko the opposite way.

Farabee, 24, is a two-time 20-goal scorer who has struggled this season with eight goals and 19 points, while Frost, 25, was tied for fourth place on the Flyers with 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists).

Both players were selected in the first round of the draft and are anticipated to provide much-needed scoring depth to a squad that is now one point off of third place in the Pacific Division despite being predicted to be a bottom feeder.

Young players like goalie Dustin Wolf and forward Matt Coronato, who scored twice in a three-point game against Anaheim, have been instrumental in Calgary's progress.

The Red Wings begin a four-game road trip in Calgary after defeating the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday, overcoming a two-goal deficit en route.

After defeating the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 on Monday, Detroit has now won two straight games after falling behind 2-0 in the first period.

Detroit is two points from a wild-card position in the Eastern Conference playoffs after putting together a 12-3-1 record and a four-game winning streak.

The team's defensive performance has aided in the cause. Alex Lyon stepped in and made 45 stops against the high-octane Oilers, and the Red Wings have given up two goals or fewer in five straight games.

It remains to be seen if the Red Wings can maintain their current pace and contend for a postseason berth for the first time since the 2015–16 campaign.
