Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Rangers Preview, What to Watch
The Pittsburgh Penguins are still facing difficulties in their quest for a postseason berth.
J.T. Miller's arrival, meanwhile, might provide the New York Rangers with the spark they need to push themselves into the top eight Eastern Conference clubs.
The Penguins attempt to extend their winning streak to four games on Friday night against the visiting Rangers, who are aiming for their third consecutive victory overall and against Pittsburgh, while superstar Sidney Crosby's health is unknown.
Although there is still time, Pittsburgh is struggling to avoid missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season for the first time since they missed four in a row in the early 2000s. The Penguins are tied for the second-fewest points (53) in the East going into Thursday's games.
After missing four games due to a lower-body ailment, fellow great Evgeni Malkin is still on injured reserve. Crosby is now battling an upper-body injury sustained during Tuesday's shootout defeat to New Jersey, which ended in a 3-2 setback.
The Penguins are 2-0-1 after a run of seven straight losses, and Crosby has scored seven of his team-high 58 points in the previous five games.
Pittsburgh lost the seven-round shootout after Kevin Hayes' goal in the third period forced extra against the Devils.
However, Pittsburgh has lost the first two meetings with New York this season and has been outscored 10-2.
After defeating Boston 3-2 at home on Wednesday, the Rangers are now three points ahead of the Penguins and four points outside of the final Eastern wild-card place going into Thursday's play. After forty minutes, a 2-1 deficit was eliminated by goals from Chris Kreider and Vincent Trocheck in the third quarter.
Miller recorded two goals and two assists in his first two games since joining New York on Saturday, despite being blanked. New linemate Mika Zibanejad has also benefited from his presence; in the last three games for New York, which has a 9-3-3 record since January 5, he has scored a goal and provided five assists.
In the last 15 games, New York standout Artemi Panarin has seven goals and eleven assists. In his two outings against Pittsburgh this season, he has recorded two goals and three assists.
Igor Shesterkin of the Rangers, who had lost his last three starts and given up 14 goals, stopped 15 of 17 shots on Wednesday. After allowing 16 goals in his last three games, backup Jonathan Quick made 34 saves in Sunday's 4-2 victory over Vegas.
In his previous seven starts, Alex Nedeljkovic of Pittsburgh has a 1.84 goals-against average and a.936 save percentage. In the past eight games, teammate Rickard Rakell has two goals and six assists.
New York Islanders vs Winnipeg Jets Preview, What to Watch
The Winnipeg Jets, who have won seven straight games, will play the New York Islanders on Friday in an attempt to create team history.
The Jets would have the longest winning streak in franchise history if they won eight in a row. Winnipeg's eight-game winning streak in the start of the season tied that team record as well, and the Jets went on another seven-game winning streak to finish 15-1-0 in their first 16 games.
The Jets' outstanding all-around play has allowed them to maintain their position at or close to the top of the NHL standings after that incredible start. In addition to having the fewest goals allowed per game (2.38), the Jets also lead the league in average goals per game (3.60).
The Islanders have been a challenging opponent in recent years, despite the Jets' strong play. Since the 2018–19 season, New York has won eight of the last nine matches between the two teams.
An Islanders squad that is on the rise is also being caught by Winnipeg. With an 11-3-0 record in their previous 14 games, the Islanders, who were buried in the basement of the Eastern Conference just a month ago, have exploded back into the postseason picture.
During this scorching run, they won seven straight games before losing 6-3 to the Florida Panthers, the reigning Stanley Cup champions, on Sunday. In Tuesday's improbable victory, the Islanders overcame a 34-14 shooting deficit to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1.
Ilya Sorokin has a perfect 7-0-0 record in his previous seven games with a 1.16 goals-against average. In order to give Sorokin time to recuperate from the consecutive starts when the league's 4 Nations Face-Off break starts on Monday, Roy stated that he intends to start him against the Jets and the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.
Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck will start, resulting in an incredible goalie battle with Sorokin. Hellebuyck leads NHL goalies in a number of important statistical categories, including as shutouts (six), wins (33), and GAA (2.04).
With a goal on Friday, Mark Scheifele will surpass all previous Jets/Atlanta Thrashers goal scorers. In the Jets' record books, Scheifele and Ilya Kovalchuk are tied at 328 goals each.
The Islanders' recent success has been accompanied by a significantly better penalty-kill unit; in their last 14 games, opponents have only gone 2-for-27 on the power play. The Jets' league-best power play, which has gone 8-for-16 with the extra attacker during Winnipeg's last six games, will put this progress to the test.
Due to a lower-body injury, defenseman Scott Mayfield has missed New York's previous two games and is not expected to return until the 4 Nations break.
With 30 goals and 37 assists, Kyle Connor leads the Jets with 67 points. With 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists), Bo Horvat is the Islanders' top scorer.
Nashville Predators vs Chicago Blackhawks Preview, What to Watch
Both the Nashville Predators and the Chicago Blackhawks are on losing streaks going into their Central Division matchup in Chicago on Friday night.
In addition to losing three straight games following Wednesday night's 4-3 overtime setback at home to the Edmonton Oilers, the Blackhawks also seemed to lose one of their key players to injury.
Jason Dickinson was assisted off the ice without applying any pressure to his left leg after suffering a high ankle sprain during the second period. After the game, Dickinson, a leading penalty killer, faceoff guy, and team leader, walked out of the training room in a walking boot.
In 53 games this season, Dickinson has 16 points (seven goals and nine assists).
After missing 11 games due to a back ailment, Craig Smith made a comeback. In 31 games this season, he has 11 points (six goals, five assists).
On Wednesday, the Blackhawks overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third period thanks to goals from Martinez (3:44 remaining) and Ryan Donato (power play, 7:48 remaining in regulation).
However, the Blackhawks suffered a crushing loss after Zach Hyman's power-play goal 1:36 into overtime.
Ottawa scored three goals after Nashville leveled the score at two with a goal from Jonathan Marchessault less than a minute into the third period.
Despite being minus-23, Connor Bedard leads the Blackhawks in points scored with 46 (15 goals, 31 assists) in 53 games. With 51 points (19 goals, 32 assists) in 52 games, Filip Forsberg leads Nashville.
Vinnie Hinostroza, a forward, was claimed by the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday after the Predators discarded him on Tuesday. On Thursday, Nashville called up forward Joakim Kemell from the American Hockey League's Milwaukee Admirals.
Colorado Avalanche vs Edmonton Oilers Preview, What to Watch
The Colorado Avalanche will visit the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night in an attempt to win their fourth straight game.
The Avalanche defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Thursday thanks to two goals and an assist from Martin Necas.
Since joining Colorado with Jack Drury in a three-team trade involving the Carolina Hurricanes and Chicago Blackhawks, Necas has amassed eight points (three goals, five assists) in seven games.
The Oilers enter the game fresh off consecutive victories in overtime, defeating the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Tuesday and Chicago (4-3) on Wednesday.
Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon (83) and Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl (81), who leads the NHL with 38 goals, are the two highest point producers in the game.
Cale Makar scored a goal and provided an assist for the Avalanche on Thursday night, while MacKinnon got three assists. Blackwood, Mackenzie, made 27 saves.
Since Brian Leetch of the New York Rangers in 1993–94, Makar became the only defenseman to record three seasons with 20 goals or more before turning 27.
Edmonton wasted a 3-1 third-period lead against Chicago. At 1:36 of overtime, Zach Hyman scored the game-winning goal on a power play.
Calvin Pickard recorded 29 saves, while Draisaitl and Jeff Skinner both contributed a goal and an assist for the Oilers. Pickard has made 11 starts in a row and is now 10-1-0.
With an assist on the game-winning goal and his 42nd OT point, Connor McDavid passed Patrick Kane and Alex Ovechkin to take sole control of the third-most points in NHL history.
Skinner, who has three goals and an assist in his previous five games, was in the top six on Wednesday, playing on the second line alongside Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin.
On November 30, the Oilers defeated the Avalanche 4-1 thanks to a goal and an assist from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and on January 16, the Oilers overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Avalanche 4-3 thanks to a game-winning goal from Evan Bouchard.
Before the NHL takes a break for the 4 Nations Face-Off (February 12–20), both clubs play their final game on Friday.
Dallas Stars vs Los Angeles Kings Preview, What to Watch
The Dallas Stars still have two games left this weekend, but the two-week break in their schedule couldn't have come at a better time.
Before a few Dallas players travel to Boston for the 4 Nations Face-Off and the remaining players return home, the Stars will play the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night and the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
"You get this close to a break, I'm sure your mind starts to wander about what you're going to do," Dallas coach Pete DeBoer remarked after his team's Tuesday 2-1 loss to the Ducks in Anaheim.
After their five-game winning streak ended on Tuesday, the Stars would like to earn four more points before splitting up. They started Thursday three points ahead of the Minnesota Wild in third place and ten points behind the Winnipeg Jets, who lead the Central Division.
Additionally, Dallas would benefit from the additional time to recover, especially defensively.
Defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin was the most recent player to leave the game; he suffered an unexplained injury in the second period versus Anaheim and was never seen again.
Defensemen Nils Lundkvist (shoulder surgery) and Miro Heiskanen (knee surgery) are both out for the Stars.
The Kings have won two straight after a four-game losing streak (0-3-1) that started the season six points behind the second-place Vegas Golden Knights in the Pacific Division.
The Kings used their speed to wear out the visiting Montreal Canadiens before putting them away with four goals in the third period to defeat them 6-3 on Wednesday night.
The two goals he scored against Montreal earned him his sixth consecutive 20-goal season, and he has now scored four goals in the last two games.
According to Hiller, Fiala's recent success has improved linemates Quinton Byfield and Alex Laferriere's performances. Laferriere and Byfield each had three assists against the Canadiens.
