The Battle of Pennsylvania has turned into the most dramatic story of the first round. Philadelphia raced to a 3-0 series lead and looked ready to close out its first playoff series win since the 2020 bubble, only for Pittsburgh to claw back with consecutive victories, including a 3-2 escape in Game 5 on Monday night.
Now the Flyers return home to Xfinity Mobile Arena with a chance to end it – and with the uncomfortable knowledge that another loss would put them one game away from becoming just the fifth team in NHL history to surrender a 3-0 series lead. Goaltender Dan Vladar has been the difference-maker for Philadelphia through five games, but he has also allowed a couple of soft goals as the series has tightened.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, has rediscovered the offense that made it one of the league’s highest-scoring teams during the regular season. Sidney Crosby played through a knee issue in Game 5 and still produced two assists, while Kris Letang and depth scorers like Elmer Soderblom and Connor Dewar have taken pressure off the veteran core. Head coach Dan Muse’s decision to hand the crease to Arturs Silovs has also paid off.
Expect a raucous, hostile building and a Flyers team that cannot afford to sit back. If Philadelphia scores first, the crowd takes over; if Pittsburgh strikes early for a fourth straight game, the nerves will be very real.
Prediction: Philadelphia finally slams the door in a tense, low-scoring Game 6.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Tampa Bay Lightning (Game 5)

This has been the tightest series of the first round. The opening three games all went to overtime before Tampa Bay finally settled matters in regulation, rallying from a two-goal deficit to win Game 4 by a 3-2 score at the Bell Centre and level the series at two wins apiece.
Brandon Hagel has been the driving force for the Lightning, scoring twice in the third period of Game 4 to lead the postseason goal race, with Nikita Kucherov and Jake Guentzel feeding him repeatedly. Andrei Vasilevskiy has been steady behind them, and Tampa Bay returns to Benchmark International Arena, where home ice has been worth something in a series this close.
Montreal counters with a young, fast group led by Cole Caufield and Zachary Bolduc, plus goaltender Jakub Dobes, who has kept the Canadiens in every game. The Habs have shown they can take leads on the road; the problem has been holding them for a full 60 minutes.
Prediction: A one-goal game again – Montreal steals it late and heads home with a chance to close.
Utah Mammoth vs. Vegas Golden Knights (Game 5)

Utah’s first postseason series has already produced wild swings. Three of the four games have been comeback wins, and Game 4 was the most chaotic yet: Vegas built a 3-0 lead, watched the Mammoth score four unanswered to go up 4-3, then tied it in the third and won 5-4 when Shea Theodore scored with under a minute left in overtime – after an apparent Pavel Dorofeyev winner was wiped out for a razor-thin offside.
The stakes for Game 5 are enormous. Historically, the winner of a Game 5 in a series tied 2-2 goes on to take the series roughly 80 percent of the time, and home teams in that spot have been especially dominant. That math favors Vegas at T-Mobile Arena.
Jack Eichel leads all skaters in the series with six points and logged nearly 30 minutes in Game 4, while John Tortorella’s group leans on the experience of a core that won the Stanley Cup in 2023. Utah answers with Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz and Logan Cooley, plus goaltender Karel Vejmelka, who has kept the Mammoth competitive despite heavy shot volume.
Prediction: Vegas survives another swing-filled night and takes a 3-2 series lead.
