Philadelphia comes home in a 2-0 hole, and the frustrating part is that Game 2 was there for the taking. The Flyers scored twice in a 39-second span of the first period through Jamie Drysdale and Sean Couturier – handing Carolina its first deficit of the entire postseason and ending a streak of 618 minutes and 51 seconds without trailing dating back to early April.
They could not hold it. Carolina clawed back, forced overtime, and Taylor Hall ended it at 18:54 of the extra period, swiping in his own rebound during a goal-mouth scramble for the first playoff overtime goal of his career. Dan Vladar was excellent again with 40 saves, twice denying Eric Robinson on second-period breakaways, and Philadelphia outshot Carolina 15-8 in overtime – Travis Konecny even had a clean breakaway he admitted afterward had to go in.
The numbers behind Carolina are daunting. Rod Brind’Amour’s team is 6-0 this postseason, only the fifth club in the past 17 years to open that way, and Hall carries a six-game point streak to start the playoffs (three goals, six assists) – a franchise record spanning the Hurricanes and Hartford Whalers eras. Frederik Andersen has been every bit as steady as he was in the first round.
Philadelphia still has real reasons to believe. Rick Tocchet’s group has been the better team for long stretches of Game 2, remains without regular-season goals leader Owen Tippett, and now gets its first home game of the round in a building that was deafening during the Pittsburgh series. All four regular-season meetings between these clubs went past regulation.
Prediction: A raucous crowd and a desperate Flyers start, but Carolina’s structure holds up late – Hurricanes take a commanding 3-0 lead.
What’s Next This Weekend
The schedule reopens on Friday with a doubleheader: Montreal at Buffalo in Game 2 at 7:00 PM ET, followed by Vegas at Anaheim in Game 3 at 9:30 PM ET. Saturday brings Game 4 between Carolina and Philadelphia at 6:00 PM ET, plus Colorado at Minnesota for Game 3 at 9:00 PM ET.
If Philadelphia loses tonight, the series is effectively over – no team has climbed out of a 3-0 hole against a team playing this well. If the Flyers win, a series that has been closer than the scoreboard suggests finally gets interesting.
