One game on the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs schedule tonight, and it opens the Eastern Conference Final. The Montreal Canadiens travel to Raleigh to face a Carolina Hurricanes team that has not lost a game – or played one – in nearly two weeks.

🏒 Game of the Day: Montreal Canadiens vs. Carolina Hurricanes (Game 1)

This is the sharpest contrast of the entire postseason. Carolina is 8-0, having swept both Ottawa and Philadelphia, and has been idle since May 9 – twelve days without a competitive game. Montreal has played 14 games, survived two Game 7s on the road, and arrives in Raleigh having finished off Buffalo in overtime on Monday night.
The Hurricanes have been close to flawless. Frederik Andersen posted a .955 save percentage in the first round and was barely tested in the second. Logan Stankoven scored in five consecutive playoff games, Taylor Hall opened the postseason with a six-game point streak – a franchise record spanning the Hurricanes and Whalers eras – and Rod Brind’Amour’s forecheck has smothered everyone it has faced. This is Carolina’s first Eastern Conference Final since 2023.
Montreal, by contrast, has done everything the hard way. Alex Newhook has scored the series-clinching goal in two separate Game 7s – against Tampa Bay and again at 11:22 of overtime in Buffalo – and rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes has become the story of the spring, making 37 saves in the clincher. Nick Suzuki, Lane Hutson, Cole Caufield and Ivan Demidov give Martin St. Louis a young core that keeps finding answers, and the Canadiens are in the conference final for the first time since their 2021 run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Rest generally beats rust in the playoffs, and Carolina proved it in the last round by scoring 91 seconds into Game 1 against a tired Philadelphia side. But twelve days is a long layoff, and Montreal is the most battle-hardened team left standing.
Prediction: Montreal takes advantage of early Carolina rust and steals Game 1 on the road.
Out West: Vegas Draws First Blood
The Golden Knights opened the Western Conference Final with a 4-2 win in Denver on Wednesday. Dylan Coghlan – who spent most of the season in the AHL and has played only since Jeremy Lauzon’s injury – scored his first playoff goal, Pavel Dorofeyev added his league-leading 10th of the postseason on the power play, and Brett Howden made it 3-0 early in the third. Nic Dowd sealed it into an empty net.
Carter Hart was outstanding with 36 saves. Colorado, missing Cale Makar with an upper-body injury and visibly disjointed on the blue line, got goals from Valeri Nichushkin and Gabriel Landeskog but could not complete the comeback. Game 2 is Friday at Ball Arena, 8:00 PM ET on ESPN.
Four teams left, and both series now have a defined shape: Vegas has home ice in the West, and Carolina’s unbeaten run finally faces a team that has already won two elimination games this spring.
