The second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs begins tonight, and it starts with a single game: the Philadelphia Flyers visit the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh. It is a one-game Saturday, but a significant one – the first head-to-head playoff series these two franchises have ever played.

Two teams arrive here on completely different clocks. Carolina has been resting for a week after sweeping the Ottawa Senators in the first round; Philadelphia is coming off a grinding six-game war with Pittsburgh that ended less than 72 hours ago.
The Hurricanes were the East’s top seed and looked every bit of it, though the sweep was far tighter than the scoreline suggests. Logan Stankoven was the driving force, opening the scoring in each of the first three games and finishing the series with a point streak stretching back to late March. Taylor Hall was Carolina’s offensive engine with seven points, and Frederik Andersen was outstanding, posting a .955 save percentage and a 1.10 goals-against average across four games. Rod Brind’Amour has also expected forward Nikolaj Ehlers and defenseman Alexander Nikishin, who suffered a concussion in Game 4, to be available for this round.
Philadelphia arrives with momentum and a goaltender playing out of his mind. Dan Vladar stopped all 42 shots in a 1-0 overtime win in Game 6, his second shutout of the series, before Cam York ended it at 17:32 of sudden death – with Matvei Michkov picking up his first career playoff point on the primary assist. Rick Tocchet’s club is through to the second round for the first time since 2020, and won a series in front of its own fans for the first time since 2012.
The question is whether rest or rhythm wins out. Carolina’s relentless forecheck and shot volume are exactly the kind of pressure that can expose a tired team, and the Flyers survived Round 1 largely because Vladar was the best player on the ice. Philadelphia will need that again immediately.
Prediction: Carolina’s depth and pace show up early, and the Hurricanes take Game 1 at home.
What Else to Watch This Weekend
Tonight is the only game on the schedule, but the playoff calendar reopens quickly. The last unfinished first-round series – Tampa Bay against Montreal, tied at three games apiece – goes to a deciding Game 7 on Sunday, with the winner drawing the Atlantic-champion Buffalo Sabres in the second round.
The Western Conference second round also gets going in short order: the Colorado Avalanche host the Minnesota Wild in Game 1 on Sunday at 9:00 PM ET on TNT, truTV and HBO Max, and the Vegas Golden Knights open against the Anaheim Ducks on Monday in Las Vegas – the first postseason meeting between those two clubs.
One game, but a heavyweight opener. If Philadelphia can steal it on the road with a tired roster, this series changes shape immediately – and the East’s No. 1 seed suddenly has questions to answer after a week of waiting.
