Washington Capitals vs Ottawa Senators Preview, What to Watch
On Thursday night, the revitalized Ottawa Senators play the Washington Capitals in an attempt to win three straight games.
The Senators defeated the Utah Hockey Club 3-1 on Sunday to wrap up a victorious weekend back-to-back game.
Washington defeated the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Tuesday to start the last game of a five-city road trip at 3-1-0. The Capitals have points in 13 of 14 games (10-1-3) and are tied for the most points in the NHL with Winnipeg, who will visit Washington on Saturday, despite losing their six-game winning streak in Vancouver on Saturday.
Logan Thompson made 32 saves in the victory over Calgary and signed a six-year, $35.1 million contract extension on Monday. Since November 25, he is 15-1-2, has won six straight games, made 11 consecutive starts, and has a 1.74 goals-against average and.935 save percentage.
The Capitals, who have given up two goals or less in each of their last eight games, were led by goals from Pierre-Luc Dubois, Dylan Strome, and Aliaksei Protas.
Washington's record in games right after losses this season is now 14-2-0.
Alex Ovechkin has only scored one goal in his last five games and failed to score. He is 20 goals away from breaking the NHL record held by Wayne Gretzky (894).
In their last ten games, the Senators have a 7-2-1 record. Rookie Leevi Merilainen improved to 5-1-1 in his last seven starts against Utah, recording 34 saves.
The Senators have positioned themselves in the center of the Eastern Conference playoff chase thanks to goals from Brady Tkachuk and Ridly Greig, two assists from Tim Stutzle, and a goal and an assist from Claude Giroux.
There will be three meetings, this being the second. On January 16 at Ottawa, Ovechkin's goal with 1:53 remaining in overtime gave the Capitals a 1-0 victory. With 24 saves, Thompson outperformed Merilainen (25 saves) to secure the shutout.
Minnesota Wild vs Montreal Canadiens Preview, What to Watch
Without their great winger Kirill Kaprizov, the Minnesota Wild passed their first test.
When they face the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night, they hope to carry on their recent success.
Kaprizov, who leads the team in goals (23), assists (29) and points (52), will be sidelined for at least four weeks after surgery due to a lower-body ailment, the Wild stated on Tuesday.
The Wild defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 on Wednesday because to timely depth scoring, strong defense, and excellent goaltending.
The Wild lead the NHL in wins and are 19-5-3 away from home. They had the fewest regulation losses in the league with five.
In his farewell game in his native Quebec, Marc-Andre Fleury of Minnesota, who grew up as a Canadiens supporter an hour east of Montreal, will start in goal. The game will be attended by about 100 family members and friends of the 40-year-old, who is 10-5-1 with a 2.76 goals-against average and.904 save percentage this season.
The Canadiens, on the other hand, will try to end a three-game losing streak with a 12–6 score differential. The 13-3-1 run that started on December 17 and put them right in the middle of the playoff chase is followed by the 0-2-1 slump.
They start the game two points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot.
Tuesday's 4-1 loss against the Winnipeg Jets was the team's longest losing run since they lost six games in a row (0-5-1) from October 29 to November 9.
Guhle will be unavailable to assist the Canadiens in getting back on track, which is unfortunate. Due to a lacerated left quadricep, the 23-year-old left Tuesday's game early in the third period. After undergoing surgery to correct the damage, the team declared on Wednesday that he would be out indefinitely.
Guhle has averaged 21:14 minutes of ice time this season and has been a vital component of their defense, helping to push the play.
Winnipeg Jets vs Boston Bruins Preview, What to Watch
The Winnipeg Jets open their three-game East Coast road trip against the Boston Bruins on Thursday, but they have business to attend to before the NHL's top two teams square off this weekend.
After defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 on Tuesday to begin the current tour, the Western Conference-leading Jets have now won four straight games. They will now focus on securing a season series sweep of the Bruins, whom they thrashed 8-1 on December 10.
The Jets' top line produced five points, paced by two goals from Kyle Connor, two assists from Gabriel Vilardi, who has scored in each of the team's previous four games, and another goal from Scheifele.
With a combined team-high 29 goals this season, Connor and Scheifele are within one goal of hitting the 30-goal mark for the sixth and fourth time in their respective careers.
Scheifele intends to engage the talent around him more, but he is still two goals away from matching Ilya Kovalchuk (328) for the most in Jets/Atlanta Thrashers franchise history.
The Bruins, who had won five of their last seven games (5-1-1) including back-to-back games before to a 7-2 away loss to the Buffalo Sabres, maintained their season of unpredictability Tuesday.
For interim coach Joe Sacco, the game revealed a troubling trend that needs to be addressed if they hope to qualify for the playoffs. Mason Lohrei and captain Brad Marchand both scored goals, and Buffalo answered in less min.
The five teams below the Bruins in the rankings all had at least two games remaining, even though they were ranked as the top wild-card club in the playoff bracket as of Wednesday. They are far from secure of their position.
Charlie McAvoy (undisclosed injury), Hampus Lindholm (lower-body), and Brandon Carlo (sickness) were the only three defenseman Boston had in the starting lineup on Tuesday. Carlo participated in an optional Wednesday skate, and McAvoy and Lindholm have resumed full team practice.
Other than forward Mark Kastelic (who has not been named), Sacco would not totally rule out anyone participating on Thursday.
Los Angeles Kings vs Tampa Bay Lightning Preview, What to Watch
The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking for one thing as January draws to a close: routine, as the 4-Nations Face-Off competition and the ensuing break loom in February.
The Lightning will play the visiting Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night to wrap up a disappointing January after playing 15 games in 27 days.
In 15 games in 2025, Tampa Bay is 6-8-1. Including a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday and a 2-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, the Lightning are now 1-4-0 over their last five games.
As a result of the skid, the Lightning's standings fell precipitously, moving them from third place in the Atlantic Division to the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.
Tampa Bay's game against Chicago on Tuesday had to have been placed in the "must win" file in an accessible location, even without the absence of No. 1 goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy due to sickness.
The Blackhawks came into the game having only won once in their previous 11 attempts (1-9-1) in Tampa and only five away games this season. Arvid Soderblom, the goalie for Chicago, excelled throughout the match, save 34 shots.
Nikita Kucherov, who recorded his 74th point in 47 games, assisted Brayden Point in scoring his team-high 28th goal.
The Kings, meanwhile, lost 3-0 to the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, dropping them to 0-2-1 on their five-game road trip.
But when veteran defenseman Drew Doughty made his season debut, Los Angeles had excellent news.
Doughty, 35, missed the team's first 47 games after breaking his left ankle on September 25 during a preseason game against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Kings coach Jim Hiller stated that the team needed to be accepting of his return as it got ready for the final stretch of the regular season, even though he should aid the team's 29th-ranked power play.
Jordan Spence, an Australian-born rear guard, has been playing a lot lately and has scored four points (three assists, one goal) in his last six games.
The 23-year-old Spence had played 110:15 minutes of ice time going into the Florida game, which was his most since 2021–22 and the fourth-highest in a five-game stretch.
Adrian Kempe, a forward for Los Angeles, has scored seven goals this month.
Chicago Blackhawks vs Carolina Hurricanes Preview, What to Watch
Compared to their previous home ice game, the Carolina Hurricanes will appear different when they return to Raleigh, North Carolina, on Thursday night.
The Hurricanes will be showcasing their new components when the Chicago Blackhawks arrive after making a huge transaction late last week.
The Hurricanes are also on a six-game winning streak; their most recent triumph was a 4-0 road win over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.
Taylor Hall and Mikko Rantanen are forwards who are new to Carolina. Since Hall played for the Blackhawks, it will be a reunion with his old squad.
From the Colorado Avalanche, Rantanen arrived. Forwards Jack Drury and Martin Necas were traded from the Hurricanes to Colorado as part of the three-way agreement.
Coach Rod Brind'Amour described the assists that Rantanen and Hall recorded in their second game with the Hurricanes as "really encouraging" while evaluating their prospects.
The Blackhawks' 4-1 victory over Tampa Bay on Tuesday night snapped a three-game losing streak. Following a three-game winning streak from December 15–19, the Blackhawks will be looking for their first consecutive victories.
Chicago's loss to Tampa Bay was only four days prior to the matchup with the Lightning. The Hurricanes defeated Carolina 4-3 in overtime last week, so this game is a rematch.
Despite Frederik Andersen's shutout in New York on Tuesday, Pyotr Kochetkov is expected to be in the nets due to Carolina's goalie rotation unless the Hurricanes decide to give Andersen more practice while he recovers from an injury.
In any case, the Hurricanes have spent a large portion of the season depending on penalty killing. Their 34 games without a power-play goal are league-high.
Riley Stillman, a defenceman, is another player that might play for Carolina. Tuesday was his first game with the Hurricanes. Because he is sporting the same No. 61 that his father, Cory Stillman, wore when the team won the Stanley Cup 19 years ago, there is a sense of familiarity among Carolina supporters.
Petr Mrazek, a former Carolina goaltender, is one of Chicago's goalies. Last week, he was in goal when Sebastian Aho's goal helped the Hurricanes defeat the Blackhawks in overtime.
After the first period, the Blackhawks, who were playing under interim coach Anders Sorensen, led 2-0, but they were unable to maintain the lead. The Blackhawks had an assist from Hall and a goal and assist from Phillip Kurashev.
Teuvo Teravainen, a forward who was a mainstay in the Hurricanes lineup for eight seasons prior to an offseason move, will also be making his Raleigh comeback on Thursday. This season, Teravainen, in his second spell with Chicago, has recorded 11 goals and 23 assists. Among them was Tuesday's empty-net goal.
New York Islanders vs Philadelphia Flyers Preview, What to Watch
On Thursday night, the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders will play each other again in Philadelphia for the third time in two weeks.
On January 16 and last Friday, the Flyers traveled to Long Island to play the Islanders. The Islanders have won all five of their subsequent meetings, including the rematch, 3-1, despite Philadelphia winning the initial encounter 5-3.
The final game of their three-game January series is now. Philadelphia will host the teams' lone other game of the season on April 12. As they continue to gaze up at a plethora of teams in the standings, both clubs are itching for more victories.
Despite their recent run of success, the Islanders are currently one point behind the Flyers in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division.
In its last five games, New York has given up only seven goals, and Tuesday's 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche was another excellent defensive display.
Simon Holmstrom scored two goals and provided an assist against Colorado, while Ilya Sorokin recorded 30 saves. Bo Horvat scored eight goals in the previous ten games for New York as well.
Tuesday's competitive contest became lopsided as the Islanders scored four goals in the third quarter. Roy is aware that he can still do better, though.
The Flyers, on the other hand, essentially denied themselves a chance to win Wednesday. Before being benched by Philadelphia coach John Tortorella close to the halfway point of a 5-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils, Samuel Ersson gave up four goals, including two on the power play.
After the match, he admitted that Ivan Fedotov, who replaced Ersson, would start in goal against New York. If nothing else, the seasoned coach is appreciative of the chance to play again on Thursday in an attempt to swiftly move behind his team's defeat on Tuesday.
The Flyers have only managed two goals in their last four games, losing three of them.
Naturally, the most recent game against the Islanders was one of those losses. Tyson Foerster defeated Sorokin in the first period, but Brock Nelson scored a goal and provided an assist as the Islanders rallied for a 3-1 victory.
"We got beat tonight, fair and square," Flyers forward Scott Laughton stated in reference to Wednesday's loss. "We were defeated tonight, but we're fortunate to have another division game on Thursday. We need to improve at this time of year, even though we have a good hockey squad."
Detroit Red Wings vs Edmonton Oilers Preview, What to Watch
On Thursday night, the Detroit Red Wings take on the host Edmonton Oilers to start a four-game Western journey.
In the penultimate game of a six-game homestand, the Red Wings and the Oilers have each won three straight games.
Most recently, Edmonton defeated the Seattle Kraken 4-2 on Monday night, and Detroit downed the visiting Los Angeles Kings 5-2.
On Monday, Lucas Raymond gave the Red Wings three assists and his 20th goal of the year. Raymond, who is in his fourth season and leads Detroit with 56 points in 50 games, has scored 20 goals for the third consecutive season.
Against the Kings, Alex DeBrincat and Elmer Soderblom both scored, and Marco Kasper recorded two goals and an assist.
Cam Talbot made 24 saves, and Dylan Larkin contributed two assists.
Soderblom scored his first goal of the year with it. Following his recall from the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids, where he has been playing since he finished with eight points (five goals, three assists) in 21 games with the Red Wings during the 2022–23 season, the 6-8, 246-pound winger was participating in his fourth game.
After serving a three-game suspension for crosschecking Vancouver's Conor Garland on the helmet on January 18, Connor McDavid scored in Monday's Oilers victory. With the victory, Edmonton's record in its previous nine games is at 7-2-0.
As per usual, McDavid and partner Leon Draisaitl rank in the top 10 scorers in the NHL. McDavid has scored 66 points (21 goals, 45 assists) in 44 games, while Draisaitl has scored 75 points (35 goals, 40 assists) in 50 games.
According to Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch, a major factor in the team's recent success has been the steady output of his players.
While backup goalie Calvin Pickard stopped 26 shots in a game he played solely because No. 1 goalie Stuart Skinner was unavailable due to the birth of his second son, Darcy, defenseman Mattias Ekholm scored a goal and provided an assist against the Kraken.
Although defenseman John Klingberg (hip surgery) is not anticipated to make his season debut until Saturday, Skinner has returned to the squad.
Vladimir Tarasenko, a forward for the Red Wings, is also anticipated to return after missing a game due to sickness. It is anticipated that Patrick Kane (upper body) and J.T. Compher (upper body) will miss the game.
Anaheim Ducks vs Calgary Flames Preview, What to Watch
The Anaheim Ducks have positioned themselves to play important games in the second half of the season and potentially compete for a postseason berth.
When they play the Flames Thursday night in Calgary for a season-high fourth consecutive victory, they can move closer to that objective.
On Wednesday, Anaheim was seven points behind the Flames for the Western Conference's last wild-card berth.
With 2.54 goals per game, the Ducks, who haven't advanced to the postseason since 2018, continue to rank bottom in the NHL in terms of scoring. However, during their three-game winning streak, they have amassed a total of 16.
With six goals and an assist in his last four games, Mason McTavish has been Anaheim's most impressive player.
According to Cronin, McTavish's success can be attributed to his increased skating speed and intensity.
After dropping their last two games, including a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Tuesday to start a three-game homestand, the Flames have let the Ducks close within seven points.
In its last two defeats, Calgary has only managed to score three goals overall. These followed a three-game winning streak during which the Flames scored 13 goals in total.
According to Huska, the Flames are also at ease in close, low-scoring contests.
Columbus Blue Jackets vs Vegas Golden Knights Preview, What to Watch
The Columbus Blue Jackets are nearing the conclusion of a four-year playoff drought in a season that started with the death of talented left winger Johnny Gaudreau six weeks prior to opening night.
In a closely contested Eastern Conference, the Blue Jackets are tied for the final wild-card place going into their crucial four-game road trip to Las Vegas on Thursday against the struggling Vegas Golden Knights. There are nine teams with 56–51 points.
The Blue Jackets will need to improve on the road if they want to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since the 2019–20 campaign.
Columbus has the poorest road record in the conference, going only 7-14-4 away from home.
With a 7-2-1 record over their last 10 games, including a 3-2 overtime victory over the visiting Los Angeles Kings on Saturday—the Blue Jackets' most recent game—they enter their trip opener with plenty of momentum.
Goalie Elvis Merzlikins continued his impressive play, stopping 31 of 33 shots to win for Columbus for the sixth time in his last seven starts, and Kirill Marchenko's goal at 3:45 of overtime sealed the victory.
With a 2-4-2 record over the last eight games, including a 4-3 overtime setback to the visiting Dallas Stars on Tuesday, Vegas limps into the game.
Despite having one of the NHL's finest home records (19-6-2), the Golden Knights have only won twice in their last six home games (2-2-2).
The Golden Knights took a 3-1 lead in the opening 24 minutes of Tuesday's game against the Stars, which was particularly upsetting after their thrilling 4-1 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Sunday. However, Wyatt Johnston's natural hat trick, which included the game-winning goal 20 seconds into overtime, helped Dallas rally.
Following Thursday, the Golden Knights will travel to the East Coast to play the Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, and New York Islanders.
