USA vs Finland Preview, What to Watch
Team USA is favored for its debut game against Finland on Thursday night in Montreal and is a favorite at the 4 Nations Face-Off due to their abundance of quality at every position.
Since winning the World Cup of Hockey in 1996, the United States has fielded its most talented team for an international competition. There are plenty of skaters who are content to be physical forces in addition to pure offensive talent wearing the red, white, and blue.
Additionally, the Americans are more motivated going into the round-robin competition, which ends on February 20 with a championship final. A sweater belonging to Johnny Gaudreau, the Columbus Blue Jackets winger who was slain while riding with his brother during the offseason, hangs in their locker room.
Gaudreau would have been guaranteed a spot on this team because he played in numerous international events. Guy, his father, was invited by the team to participate in team dinners and pre-tournament training on the ice.
As expected, Finland will start with Nashville Predators goalie Juuse Saros in goal, while Team USA will start Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck.
With three blueliners, including Dallas Stars star Miro Heiskanen, sidelined by injuries, Finland is undoubtedly lacking in defensive depth. Nevertheless, any club would be remiss to overlook the Finns, who have an abundance of offensive weapons.
Finland has a reputation for playing excellent team games, but Saros will have a difficult time keeping the Americans off the scoreboard. They play a style that generates offense by forcing turnovers and counterattacking, and they have Aleksander Barkov, the captain of the Florida Panthers, who is perhaps the best defensive forward in hockey.
The Finns should have no trouble scoring goals with players like Lehkonen, Barkov, Mikko Rantanen, Patrik Laine, Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, Roope Hintz, Mikael Granlund, and Kaapo Kakko at their disposal.
