Utah Hockey Club vs Washington Capitals Preview, What to Watch

Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goal-scoring record is being eroded by Alex Ovechkin, game after game.

He now has 879 goals in his career, 16 more than Gretzky, and will try to maintain that total when the Washington Capitals play the Utah Hockey Club on Sunday.

Ovechkin is on pace to reach 45 goals this season after scoring in four consecutive games to reach 26 goals. If he maintains that pace, he will have hit the 40-goal milestone for the fourteenth time in his 20 NHL seasons. At 39, he is scoring 0.68 goals per game this season, which is the fifth-highest total in his NHL career.

Spencer Carbery, the coach of Washington, thinks his captain, who missed 16 games from mid-November to late December due to a fractured leg, has even more in store.

The Capitals have a chance to tie the Winnipeg Jets for first place in the NHL overall standings going into Sunday's game. They recently extended their winning streak to five games (3-0-2) with a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.

Before the league takes a break for the 4 Nations Face-Off, which takes place from Wednesday through February 20, Sunday will be the last game for both clubs. Two teams are not represented at the event, including the Capitals.

After losing to the Carolina Hurricanes 7-3 on Saturday, Utah is hoping to recover when they get to the nation's capital. As it has been for the majority of the season, it brought the team down to the NHL's equivalent of.500 on the season.

Utah sits eight points from the second Western Conference wild-card berth despite having a mediocre record.

Lawson Crouse, a forward with 12 points (eight goals, four assists) through 54 games, has struggled offensively this season. After scoring more than 20 goals in each of the previous three seasons, he is on track to score just 12.

After being benched against the Flyers on Tuesday, the Utah alternate captain returned to the starting lineup on Thursday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. In the last fifteen games, this was only his second goal.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs Montreal Canadiens Preview, What to Watch

In the NHL's final game before the break, the Tampa Bay Lightning will travel to play the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday afternoon in Super Bowl, hoping to cap off a successful week leading up to the 4 Nations Face-Off competition.

It will be the last of three encounters between the clubs in the Atlantic Division. The first two meetings were won by Montreal, 5-2 in Tampa on December 29 and 3-2 in Quebec on January 21.

Tampa Bay right winger Brandon Hagel, a member of Team Canada, will wear the red and white of his nation with pride while playing for coach Jon Cooper. However, the Lightning's break is likely to disappoint him at least a little.

Hagel now has six markers in his previous five games after scoring the first and last markers in Saturday's 6-3 victory in Detroit. He is the third-highest scorer on the Lightning with 26 goals.

After acquiring the 26-year-old Hagel from the Chicago Blackhawks in March 2022, the team has watched him develop.

On Saturday, Brayden Point scored 30 goals for the third consecutive season and the fifth time in his career.

After two periods, Tampa Bay led 23-1-1, and Dylan Duke, a former Michigan Wolverines forward, scored the Lightning's sixth goal in his NHL debut.

Jake Evans, who has scored the game-winning marker in both of Montreal's triumphs over the Lightning this season and has five so far, helped the team gain ground in the wild-card standings with a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay at home on January 21.

Montreal lost to New Jersey 4-0 at home on Saturday in their penultimate game before the break, including goals from Jack and Luke Hughes of the Devils.

As Montreal dropped to 1-6-1 in its last eight games, former Habs goalie Jake Allen recorded 34 saves for his fourth shutout.

The Canadiens began the postseason by earning points in eight of nine games (7-1-1) that began with a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on January 4. This was their first attempt to qualify for the playoffs since the shortened 2020–21 season, which ended with them losing to the Lightning in the Stanley Cup Final.

Three red, white, and blue players will represent the Canadiens in the 4 Nations Face-Off: wingers Joel Armia and Patrik Laine for Team Finland, and hometown goalie Sam Montembeault for Team Canada.

On Saturday, Montembeault lost for the fourth time in his last five appearances after giving up four goals on 22 shots. With three shutouts in 41 games this season, he dropped to 18-20-3.
