Edmonton Oilers vs Washington Capitals Preview, What to Watch

The Eastern Conference leaders easily defeated the host Pittsburgh Penguins 8-3 on Saturday, dispelling any suspicions that the Washington Capitals could become slack off after a 13-day hiatus for the 4 Nations Face-Off competition.

The victory increased Washington's lead over the Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division to 12 points and their winning streak to seven games (4-0-3).  In 19 of their last 20 games, the Capitals have gained a point (13-1-6).

Following that, both teams will play Connor McDavid and the visiting Edmonton Oilers in the second half of a back-to-back on Sunday afternoon.

With the defeat, which was their sixth in the last 11 games, Edmonton lost their tie for first place in the Pacific Division with the Vegas Golden Knights (5-5-1).  In the game, Stuart Skinner made 26 saves, the first of five consecutive on the road.

The Capitals scored three goals in a 3:47 span during the second period, which saw five goals, including two by Jakob Chychrun.

New York Rangers vs Pittsburgh Penguins Preview, What to Watch

When the NHL began league play on Saturday, neither the New York Rangers nor the Pittsburgh Penguins had the start they were hoping for.  When the Rangers face the Penguins on Sunday, both clubs will get another opportunity.

The Rangers lost 8-2 to the Buffalo Sabres, falling behind 5-0 after a period. The Rangers are currently four points behind the Ottawa Senators and the Detroit Red Wings for a wild-card position in the Eastern Conference.  On the other hand, Pittsburgh lost to the Washington Capitals 8-3 at home after giving up five straight goals.

After the two-week layoff, Rangers forward J.T. Miller, who helped set up both goals on Saturday, predicted that the club will be a little rusty for the 4 Nations Face-Off.  The skaters, he claimed, "left the goalies hanging out to dry."

Sidney Crosby, the captain of the Penguins, played Saturday even though it was thought that he should take a break after playing for Canada in the 4 Nations. This season, he scored his 18th goal. With the goal, which tied the game at two, he tied Bobby Hull for 18th place in league history with 610 goals in his career.

The Penguins are still at 55 points after the loss to Washington. That puts the Rangers three points behind. But right now, Sullivan's squad is only four points above the Sabres, who are in the conference cellar, and they are last in the Metropolitan Division.

New Jersey Devils vs Nashville Predators Preview, What to Watch

Neither the Pittsburgh Penguins nor the New York Rangers got the start they were hoping for when the NHL started league play on Saturday.  Both teams will have another chance on Sunday when the Rangers play the Penguins.

The Rangers were behind 5-0 after one period and lost 8-2 to the Buffalo Sabres. In the Eastern Conference, the Rangers are currently four points behind the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators for a wild-card spot.  However, after allowing five goals in a row, Pittsburgh lost to the Washington Capitals 8-3 at home.

With a three-point advantage over the Washington Capitals, New Jersey was leading the Metropolitan Division going into that matchup with Carolina. Since then, it has dropped to third place, 14 points behind the Capitals.

Jack Hughes continued where he left off for New Jersey before to the tournament, scoring both goals. He had just two days prior played for Team USA in their 3-2 overtime loss to Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off title game.

He has scored five goals in his last four games and finished his last nine games with 11 points (eight goals and three assists). Only once in that time has he been kept off the scoresheet.

For the first time in a month, the Predators go into Sunday's game seeking a third consecutive victory. On Saturday, Nashville defeated the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 with ease.

The Predators, who had high expectations going into the season after adding Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei in the offseason, have had a poor season. Rather, the team is currently 30th in the NHL in terms of points and 16 points outside of a postseason berth.

With the game-winning goal against Colorado halfway through the third period, Marchessault now has 18 goals for the season, second only to club leader Filip Forsberg's 21. He scored seven points (three goals, four assists) during that time, extending his scoring run to four games.

Anaheim Ducks vs Detroit Red Wings Preview, What to Watch

The Detroit Red Wings were overwhelmed with sorrow after their first game after a two-week vacation.  They will play the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, so at least they won't have much time to think about their OT loss to Minnesota.

On Saturday, Detroit lost to the visiting Wild 4-3 in overtime after failing to maintain a 3-1 lead in the third period.  The Red Wings lost a crucial point in their pursuit of a postseason berth as a result.

Twenty-two seconds into the third period, Raymond scored a goal on a power play.  After the Wild withdrew their goalie, the Red Wings conceded the tying goal then gave up a goal on a delayed penalty.

Detroit was unable to capitalize on a 4-on-3 power play in overtime, and Marco Rossi scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway after exiting the penalty box.

Larkin tied for the league lead with his 13th power-play goal of the year.  Larkin, a well-known member of Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off competition, will be playing his third game in four days.

The Red Wings' first encounter with Anaheim on November 15 was similarly similar.  The Ducks won 6-4 thanks to four goals in the third period.

On Sunday, Anaheim's turnaround will be even faster than Detroit's.  The Ducks won 3-2 in overtime at Boston on Saturday night, while the Red Wings played an early afternoon game.  With 1:11 left in regulation, the Bruins tied the game, and Leo Carlsson scored the game-winning goal.

Anaheim will enter Sunday's match with a four-game winning run.  It has surpassed the.500 threshold after winning seven of its past eight games.

Over the course of the four-game run, the Ducks' defense has been strong; they have allowed no more than two goals.

After getting hurt in a scuffle in the second period on Saturday, Detroit center Andrew Copp is not expected to play on Sunday.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Chicago Blackhawks Preview, What to Watch

When the Toronto Maple Leafs travel to play the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, they will try to build on an imperfect victory.

After defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 6-3 at home ice on Saturday, the Maple Leafs begin a four-game road trip.

Carolina scored three goals in less than three minutes during the third period, cutting Toronto's 4-0 lead to one goal, but the Maple Leafs' two empty-net goals clinched the victory.

The Maple Leafs have two games remaining and are one point behind the Florida Panthers for first place in the Atlantic Division after winning four of their last five games.

Two of Toronto's half-dozen markers from the Carolina victory were noteworthy. With his 389th insurance goal of his career, captain Auston Matthews tied Darryl Sittler for second place on Toronto's all-time chart. With 420, Mats Sundin leads the franchise.

The 25-year-old forward Alex Steeves, who leads the American Hockey League in goals this season with 29, was also called up from the minor leagues and started the scoring in his 12th big league game with his first NHL goal.

After losing to the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1 on the road on Saturday, Chicago, which leads only the San Jose Sharks in the overall standings, will be back at home.

With just one win in six games and two in ten, the Blackhawks were no match for the Blue Jackets when they pulled away after falling down early and coming close at 2-1 halfway through the contest.

Even though the Blackhawks still have a long way to go before they can contend, interim coach Anders Sorensen has the task of finding methods to keep his players motivated in the final games, particularly when they are playing against clubs that are either fighting for a spot in the playoffs or trying to maintain their standings.

San Jose Sharks vs Calgary Flames Preview, What to Watch

When the Calgary Flames play the struggling San Jose Sharks on Sunday after taking a 4 Nations Face-Off break, they will be anxious for a comeback performance.

The Flames, who have defied the predictions by staying in the playoff picture for two-thirds of the season, stumbled into the break with only two wins in eight games (2-5-1) and a losing streak of three games.

On February 8, they lost 3-2 in overtime to the visiting Seattle Kraken after giving up a two-goal lead in the final seven minutes of regulation.

Coach Ryan Huska wants his team to avoid focusing too much on the big picture. Calgary, which had dropped to three points outside of a playoff berth prior to the league's resumption on Saturday, is facing a pivotal moment in the season to preserve any aspirations of making the playoffs.

Defenseman Kevin Bahl, who has missed eight games, and forward Connor Zary, who has missed 15 games, are both anticipated to return, giving the Flames a much-needed lift.

The Sharks experienced an even worse run of play than the Flames did before the intermission.

Last in the league rankings, San Jose has lost four straight games and has won once in 11 games (1-9-1). Their most recent defeat came on February 8 at the hands of the Dallas Stars, who defeated them 8-3.

The Sharks are among the league's weaker teams, which is not surprising, but the franchise anticipates a great campaign finale.

Alexander Wennberg and Nico Sturm, two important forwards, should return from injury when the Sharks travel for seven games.

But before the league's trade deadline on March 7, they will undergo some adjustments as they prepare for the sixth straight season without making the playoffs.

San Jose had previously exchanged two veterans for draft picks: winger Mikael Granlund, who was leading the team with 45 points, and defender Cody Ceci.

Awaiting free agents without restrictions  Trade candidates include defenseman Jan Rutta, goalie Vitek Vanecek and Alexandar Georgiev, as well as forward Sturm and teammate Luke Kunin.

The Sharks anticipate that their youthful roster will acquire the dedication required to succeed despite the impending changes.
