4 Nations Face-Off: Finland vs Sweden Preview, What to Watch
Finland takes on Sweden, one of two teams vying for a spot in the round-robin. It's time for another Finland-Sweden prediction and choice in our 4 Nations Face-Off odds series.
Finland enters the 4 Nations Face-Off having lost their opening match. In their most recent match, they played the United States. Finland took a 1-0 lead in the first period thanks to an early goal from Henri Johiahrju. Brady Tkachuk, however, would respond with a goal of his own in the opening period. Matt Boldy's goal in the second period put the score at 2-1. The third period would then be dominated by the US. Jake Guentzel scored 11 seconds after Matthew Tkachuk's goal, which came 15 seconds into the period.
The United States prevailed 6-1 after both Tkachuk brothers scored another goal in the third period.
In the meantime, Sweden's first game was against Canada. Nathan MacKinnon gave Canada the lead with a goal just 56 seconds into the match. Before the quarter ended, they would increase the lead to two. Jonas Brodin's goal in the second period made it a one-goal contest, but Canada would respond. The game was then tied and forced into overtime after goals by Joel Eriksson Ek and Adrian Kempe in the third period. Canada won 4-3 in overtime thanks to a goal from Mitch Marner that Sidney Crosby had assisted on for his third goal of the match.
Mikko Rantanen plays for Finland in the top line. With 26 goals and 40 assists between his stints with Colorado and Carolina this season, Rantanen is currently seventh in the NHL in terms of points. Aleksander Barkov and Artturi Lehkonen join him on the top line. Rantanen's old Colorado linemate Lehknonen has scored 23 goals and provided 10 assists so far this season. Aleksander Barkov, meanwhile, has 14 goals and 38 assists.
Sebastian Aho is in the second line. With 20 goals and 25 assists this season, Aho is now ranked 27th in the NHL in terms of points. Roope Hintz, who ranks 29th in the NHL in goals scored so far this season, joins him on the line.
Patrik Laine, who has six goals and 18 assists so far this season, completes the line. In the first game, the third line scored a point, but the top two lines did not produce anything. Mikael Granlund, who has 15 goals and 34 assists this season, contributed an assist in the opening match.
Despite starting the first game, Juuse Saros allowed six goals on thirty-two shots. Kevin Lankinen might end up in goal for this one as a result. This season, Lankinen has a 2.53 goals-against average, a.905 save percentage, and a 19-8-7 record. He had allowed two goals or fewer in three of his previous four outings and had won three of them.
From the front line, Sweden will be led by Filip Forsberg. With 21 goals and 32 assists, Forsberg is currently ranked 33rd in the NHL in terms of points. He now has 53 points overall for the season. Adrian Kempe and Elias Pettersson are anticipated to accompany him. This season, Pettersson has 11 goals and 23 assists. Kempe finished with 25 goals and 21 assists, including a goal in the opening match.
In the first game, Jesper Bratt also contributed a point with an assist in the third period. With 17 goals and 47 assists so far this season, he has 64 points overall, ranking 11th in the NHL. Bratt and Lucas Raymond are anticipated to be on the rink together.
Raymond is tied for 19th in the NHL in points, coming in with 21 goals and 28 assists this year, good for 59 total points. Meanwhile, William Nylander is projected to be in the second line. Nylander is second in the NHL in goals, sitting with 33 goals and 22 assists, good for 55 total points. That point total is good for 55th in the NHL. He will be joined by Richard Rakell who is currently 14th in the NHL in goals this year. He has 25 goals with 23 assists, good for 48 total points.
4 Nations Face-Off: USA vs Canada Preview, What to Watch
It's unclear if Saturday's round-robin matchup between the United States and Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal is a precursor to a championship final, but it looks like a heavyweight matchup to remember.
The antagonism was already intensified, even before the White House's political turbulence over tariffs and annexation negotiations added fuel to the fire.
On Wednesday, Canada defeated Sweden 4-3 in overtime after the home team blew a two-goal lead in the third quarter. Brady Tkachuk and his brother Matthew each scored twice as the Americans crushed Finland 6-1 the next day after blowing open a tie game late in the second stanza.
It remains to be seen if the Canadians can prevent the train from accelerating or if the United States can maintain that momentum.
The Canadians are aware that they need to play much better in this game, but they also have other obstacles to overcome.
Shea Theodore, a defenseman, will be out for a few weeks due to an injury. Travis Sanheim will take his place in the starting lineup. Cale Makar, the top offensive defenseman, was sick and missed Friday's practice.
In practice, forward Travis Konecny skated as a defenseman. Thomas Harley, a defenseman for the Dallas Stars, has been brought to Montreal by Canada in case Makar is unable to play.
Jon Cooper, the coach of Canada, stated that he is "confident" Makar will play.
Most likely, the adjustments don't stop there. Sam Bennett is expected to take Konecny's place on the fourth line after being scratched in the tournament opener, giving Canada more snarl in the lineup.
Cooper did not say if he would start in goal in place of Jordan Binnington, who was outstanding late in regulation and overtime but struggled as Canada gave up that lead against Sweden, or if he would go with Adin Hill.
Be prepared for an intense event regardless of who is skating.
